The Dallas Cowboys are re-signing quarterback Jon Kitna with Tony Romo dealing with a herniated disk that may end his season.

The Cowboys worked out quarterbacks David CarrJohn Skelton,Tyler ThigpenRichard Bartel and Caleb Hanie on Tuesday.Kitna would back up Kyle Orton if he's starting with Romo likely out this week against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Kitna, 41, has been coaching and teaching at Lincoln High School in Tacoma, Wash.

The Cowboys cut kick returner  Michael Spurlock, who had a 62-yard return against the Washington Redskins during his first game with Dallas.

Kitna last played for the Cowboys in 2011.

Kitna has played 15 NFL seasons, including stints with Dallas, theDetroit Lions, CIncinnati Bengals and Seattle Seahawks. He has passed for 29,745 career yards and 169 touchdowns and 165 interceptions.

In 2010, he started nine games for the Cowboys when Romo was injured and passed for 2,365 yards, 16 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

Pretty funny, Kitna didn't even try out, and Jason Garrett's first reaction to Kitna's interest was, "are you serious?" I can imagine how bad the tryout for the others was. Sure, Kitna knew the offense well... 2 years ago.

Maybe he can help determine the mathematical probability of the coin flip, if nothing else. Or solve a word problem: if DeMarco Murray gets injured every 6 carries, and he's carried it twice already, what percentage of carries does he have left before he likely has to leave the game?

Cool story. Always liked Kitna. Just didn't want him as the starter.

Best part of the story is he's looking at a paycheck of $55K, and he's going to donate it to the high school where he works.

Small hands. Not the best decisions when the adrenalin is flowing. Amazingly good guy!

Orton comes in with Kitna's guidance and beats the Eagles and takes the Cowboys to a AFC Championship or SB... then what happens?

There is ZERO chance that the Cowboys win the AFC this year.

FIRST - they have to beat Philly to win the NFC East

SECOND - they have to beat an NFC Wild Card team (New Orleans, Carolina, San Francisco, Seattle, Arizona - pick one)

THIRD - they then have to travel to beat the NFC South or NFC West champ (see list above)

FOURTH - they then have to have the NFL transfer them out of the NFC and into the AFC

FIFTH - if they pull all of that off, THEN they have to win the AFC

No freaking way, as I see step #4 as their biggest stumbling block.  Also, FOX would complain if they didn't have an NFC Championship game to televise, what with the 2 AFC finalists AND the Cowboys somehow playing a three-sided game over on CBS.  No, there is no chance that the Cowboys could win the AFC.

Kitna to donate this week's $53K game check to the high school where he works:

Next week at schools around the country, teachers and students will start classes by discussing what they did over winter break. A math teacher at Lincoln High School in Tacoma, Wash. will have a better story than most.

Jon Kitna, the 41-year-old former NFL quarterback who is now a high school math teacher and football coach, was signed this week by the Dallas Cowboys. He’ll serve as Kyle Orton’s backup if Tony Romo is unable to play in Sunday night’s NFC East championship. For that, Kitna will receive a game check of approximately $53,000 — not bad for a few days work.

But Kitna won’t be cashing that check himself. He told Cowboys play-by-play man Brad Sham he’ll donate the money to his high school, according to The Dallas Morning News.
