The Washington Redskins have found their next head coach.

NFL Media's Jeff Darlington reported Thursday morning that Jay Gruden and the team have finalized a deal to make him the successor to the fired Mike Shanahan, per multiple sources familiar with the negotiations.

Gruden began hammering out the parameters of a deal Wednesday night, putting his interview with the Minnesota Vikings on hold, a source informed of the process told NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport.

It caps a search for the Redskins that spread a wide net from the start but settled on an offensive-minded leader. Gruden spent the past three seasons as the offensive coordinator of the Bengals, helping to guide Cincinnati to three straight playoff appearances.

Long-married to the West Coast offense, he goes from working with the inconsistent Andy Dalton to young Robert Griffin III.

Rapoport also was told that Raheem Morris is being eyed as defensive coordinator while Hue Jackson is a candidate to run the offense. Morris, Washington's defensive backs coach over the past two seasons, was kept around after Shanahan's dismissal for a reason, according to Rapoport. Jim Haslett also remains on staff as a possibility to retain the role he's held since 2010.

Jackson makes plenty of sense. He worked closely with Gruden's offense in Cincinnati after a one-year stint as coach of the Oakland Raiders. One of the league's underrated playcallers, Jackson should have plenty of fun working with RGIII.

We'll have much more on this story here on NFL.com throughout the day.

If you think Marvin Lewis just had Hue Jackson around just because you’re crazy. This scenario is exactly why he was RB coach.

Also probably moved fast as they didn't want Gruden possibly taking Hue with him (don't know if he even would anyway)

Just to go along with the Redskins theme, Yahoo Sports thinks Washington should trade Cousins to us.

Don't really think Cousins brings any more to the table than Andy.  Would rather take a shot at an athletic guy who needs development than a guy who "might" have a little higher ceiling than Andy although that is certainly debatable.

not sure trading picks is the way to go, but competition, some way, some how, should be welcomed in Cincinnati.  Who knows, with Hue Jackson most likely filling the OC role, maybe we see a different Dalton under center.  I don't know what to think at this point.  Just hope this team, as a whole, doesn't regress to the likes of Houston and Atlanta.  If its because of Dalton's continued up and down play, though, it may not be a bad thing for the following year's draft, as they would net a pretty high pick, if not, the top pick.

Report: Jay Gruden agrees to become Redskins head coach

The Redskins and Jay Gruden were reportedly making progress toward an agreement for Gruden to become the team’s next head coach when Thursday got underway.

It seems that process has reached its finish line. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Gruden has agreed to leave his post as the Bengals offensive coordinator to become the head coach in Washington and Jay Glazer of FOX Sports reports Gruden has informed the Bengals that he’s leaving the team.

Gruden interviewed with the Redskins on Wednesday and was scheduled to interview for the top job in Minnesota on Thursday, but it seems the Vikings will have to take things in a different direction. That’s also true of the Titans, who interviewed Gruden on Tuesday and are scheduled to interview Chargers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt on Friday.

It will be Gruden’s first head coaching job in the NFL, but he has been a head coach in both Arena Football and the UFL. The Redskins are expected to make an official announcement of Gruden’s hiring later on Thursday.

Hate to see coach Gruden go but glad he's fulfilling every 'coaches' dream in being a HC in the @nfl at some point.

Redskins TE coach Sean McVay is expected to become Washington's OC, per league sources, Raheem Morris the likely defensive coordinator.

That TE coach is one he tried to bring to Cincy initially but Was blocked the move.

Interesting move at DC - conflicts with early thought about keeping Haslett.

Why did Rey put quotes around 'coaches'? LOL... Freudian slip?

I'm glad he's gone. This was the only way to get rid of him because he wouldn't have been fired.

I'm okay with Hue as OC, not ecstatic but fine with it.

I think there's now less of an allegiance to Dalton. Expect a QB (or two) added via the draft and FA.

I could see one of the D position coaches promoted to DC if Zim goes.

I believe this will be ML's last season. Probably bigger changes coming in 2015.

He's going from one of the toughest divisions in the NFL to one of the weakest.   I think his biggest challenge will be having to mollycoddle RG3 into performing.  Then again, I've always thought Shanahanahanahan to be an enormous asshole, so IDK if it's all on RG3.
