The covered area stretches 100 miles from the actual border. Critics argue these searches are clear violations of the Fourth Amendment. The case stems from the ACLU's challenge to the federal law on behalf of a graduate student named Pascal Abidor. He was traveling by train from Canada to New York when authorities searched his laptop and saw pictures of Hamas rallies. An Islamic Studies student, Abidor argued that the pictures were only research. He was detained and questioned for hours and the laptop was held for more than a week. Or, really any administrations lately... but yes, 100 miles does seem excessive. Maybe it covers some of the vast desert border areas and it takes them an hour to get to confirmed border breaks? Indonesia is an archipelago in Southeast Asia and has the 4th largest population in the world. The only significant terrorist attack on US soil in the past decade was perpetrated by two Caucasians. Some idiot redneck killed twice as many people attacking Sikhs in the mistaken belief that they were Muslims. His links to white supremacist organizations were not investigated, though they are in fact more of a threat than any foreign terrorist group. White Supremacist groups have been carrying out terrorist attacks in this country for over 150 years, they bombed federal buildings 6 years before 9/11 but they are still able to operate in this country. You would think that if the War of Terror was real they would focus on the home grown terrorist who has demonstrated the willingness to attack it's own government and citizens before they started wars in other sovereign countries. You would think that if the War of Terror was real they would focus on the home grown terrorist who has demonstrated the willingness to attack it's own government and citizens before they started wars in other sovereign countries. One of my favorite (ha) recent ones were the Hutaree Militia. Feds bumbled the case & ended up giving them back all their weapons along with "hundreds of thousands of rounds of ammunition".
