THE mock draft

for today at least  :10:

just 1-7, no comp picks....

1. Aaron Donald DL Pitt ...he's a Geno Atkins clone IMO and he might be the most consistently dominant defensive player in this draft...his size won't be a good fit for every team though, which is the only reason he'd even be available here....flat out beast.

2. Lamarcus Joyner CB/S Fla St ...like Donald, he's gonna get downgraded by teams because of size.....big mistake.....he could come in and be a difference-maker from day one for this team covering the slot IMO....bigtime playmaker on a GREAT college defense.

3. Jack Mewhort OT Ohio St ...he reminds me a lot of a young Andrew Whitworth actually.

4. Bryan Stork C Fla St ...at some point somebody has got to knock Kyle Cook out of the line-up for good...might as well be this kid in a year or two...Rimington Trophy winner with 40 career starts for the National Champs.

5. Andre Williams RB Boston College

6. Ryan Grant WR Tulane

7. Jay Prosch FB Auburn

1. I would not dislike the pick if Gilbert and Dennard are gone and we re-sign AC, I just don't know if they will use a first round pick on what is arguably the deepest position on the team.

2. I'm warming to him.

3. Mixed feelings.  If we re-sign AC I'm not sure we need a T that early, if we lose AC, I may want one in 1.

4. Ok if he is still there.

5. If he can catch, but just wasn't used as a receiver, ok, but he had 0 receptions this year and something like 10 in his career.  Also not sure he lasts that long.

6. He's rated a 4th round pick, and I don't like his size/speed numbers, although I am not really familiar with him beyond his "Prospect Profile".

7. He is also graded a 4th rounder.  I'm also not sure if they want a true FB.

I also think we are going to need a DE somewhere.

Love it. I've made the Whitworth/Mewhort comparison also. The thing I really like about him is that I think he is like Whit in that he may be able to play any position other than Center. Without knowing exactly what the specific need is on OL, I like the idea of getting a guy who gives you a lot of versatility and ability to move guys around when the inevitable injuries occur. Also like Whit in that he is a tough, high character guy with toughness and leadership abilities.

My only slight nitpick is I think we are already pretty loaded with interior pass rusher since most of our DEs can slide inside. I see our major pass rushing weakness as lack of outside speed. All things being equal, I'd prefer a DE or DE/LB tweener over another DT. Donald is good though.

I also haven't seen much of the RB Williams. I know he rushed for a ton of yards, but from what little I've seen, he didn't look all that dynamic. Is he really going to be an upgrade over BJGE or just a similar plodder type guy?

I'd love Donald or Dennard.....Joyner I like very much.  He's very skilled although he lacks the ideal measurables....a playmaker though.  Love the C pick but Stork looks a little small/weak to anchor an OLine in the NFL.  I would like to upgrade the C position, that's for sure.    Don't see much option in the draft......FA is a more likely fix but will Alexander want to replace Cook?  I doubt it.   That guy is the lease bold coach on the Bengals' staff.   I'd upgrade OLine coach while I was at it.

post-combine, take two....

no trades and no comp picks again, just 1-7....

1. Ryan Shazier OLB Ohio St- freakishly athletic and ultra-productive playmaker that flies around the field like a heat seeking missile...he's also a fantastic blitzer and could excel at any of the LB positions in a 4-3....just stick him out there at one of the spots and let him run around and make plays, he'll be a tackling machine and playmaker from the get go.

2. Lamarcus Joyner CB Florida ST- this kid is the spittin image of a young Antoine Winfield when he came out of Ohio St.....a 5'8 wrecking ball that plays like he's 6'2 and impacts at every level of the defense....he was the heart and soul of the best defense in the country on a national championship team, the only reason he makes it this far is because of his size.

3. Charles Sims RB West Virginia- .....do-it-all back at WVU with good size/speed combo and reliable hands (82 catches last 2 years)....after a strong combine he might not make it this far, but for now, I'm sticking with him here.

4. Bryan Stork C Florida State- Remington Trophy Winner/first-team All-ACC last year and four year starter....probably not a guy that's going to start right away, but after a year or two in the system to learn the pro game and get stronger, he could easily develop into a top-flight starting C.

5. Dontae Johnson CB/S North Carolina St- team captain and coach on the field type kid that played every spot in the secondary during his career as a 4 year starter in the ACC....nice size/speed combo.

6. Keith Wenning QB Ball St- high character kid and one of the top passers in the history of the MAC with nice size and a good arm...perfect developmental prospect.

7. Max Bullough LB Mich St- old school productive Big 10 MLB and 2x team captain that hurt his draft stock with an end of year suspension and then a not so great combine....the kid's a player, he just needs to get his head out of his ass and get to work.....sound familiar?

I like your draft.  :good3:

Is Max Bullough any relation to old Bengal coach and Paul Brown crony,  Hank Bullough... Michigan State Class of 1954?

Grandson? love child?  Something?

The 4.55 that Joyner ran has me concerned.

I would love Shazier in 1, I just don't think it happens.

I think Joyner will time better at his pro-day.....he certainly plays a lot faster than that when you watch his tape and that's the only thing I really care about.
