A new poll of NFL players suggests that most would have no problem sharing a locker room with Michael Sam or any other gay player.

The poll, conducted by ESPN, asked 51 NFL players if a player’s sexual orientation matters. Only seven of them, or 14 percent, said yes, while 44 of them, or 86 percent, said no.

ESPN.com's NFL Nation and ESPN The Magazine asked players, on the condition of anonymity, four true-false questions about their thoughts on having a gay teammate. Here are the results:

• A player's sexual orientation matters to you.
»» True: 7
»» False: 44

• I had teammates or coaches who used homophobic slurs this past season.
»» True: 32
»» False: 19

• I would shower around a gay teammate.
»» True: 39
»» False: 12

• An openly gay player would be comfortable in an NFL locker room.
»» True: 25
»» False: 21
»» No answer: 5

If 44 NFL players said a player's sexual orientation does not matter to them, why would only 39 say they would shower around a gay teammate ?  Out of all these players, the only question in which there was "no answer" was the last question.  Pretty much split down the middle on whether a gay player would be comfortable in a locker room.  Guess the NFL has a way to go on gay players in the NFL.

IF anyone can find the stats or possibly a nationwide poll on similar questions.  Is the NFL a microcosm of the culture in America or are they separate on their thought processes as a result of their job field / chosen profession , etc... ?

I would assume that was taken after Sam's announcement?

Yes, the survey was done after the announcement.

ESPN.com's NFL Nation and ESPN The Magazine combined on an anonymous survey last week off the news of Sam coming out as the first openly gay NFL prospect.

I wouldn't give that data much validity.....players aren't being honest IMO when being questioned like this.   Sam is not going to have an easy time in the NFL locker room IMO.

I heard on the radio that Michael Sam was grading out as the 3rd or 4th best DLineman on his own team as far as NFL potential goes, making him a late round draft pick at best.   That's crazy.....a co SEC defensive player of the year being 3rd or 4th best lineman on his own team?  Doesn't jive really....

While it is a sad excuse for a data collection device, it is the only one done that I am aware of.  Stats and numbers are what they are for better or worse.  Sometimes it matters on who is actually interpreting this data.

As such, I stated above that the values reflect that there are conflicts with the numbers.  To the point of the last question, pretty close to saying only 50 percent of the players would treat gay's fairly in the locker room.

Still unable to find anything on the rest of the US in regards to how they would treat gays to determine if the NFL is similar or distant in its attitude towards gays.

No, I fully understand....wasn't trying to "attack" you.   Just that NFL players won't be close to honest when being surveyed non anonymously when it comes to a subject like homosexuality.  IMO.

There will be more and more data that comes out in the near future about homosexuality in the sports arena, more data that can be taken with a grain or mound of salt.   But this is just my opinion though based on what I saw, what I experienced as the culture in locker rooms.

  • 3 weeks later...

He has taken himself off my draft board by starting to sell "Stand with Sam" clothing. I don't care that he's gay but I now question his commitment to being a football player.

Did you feel that way about Cam Newton when he started shilling for Under Armor before the draft?

No. Under Armour endorsement was a purely money driven endeavor for personal gain.

Sam, on the other hand, is selling homemade quality t-shirts and buttons on his website in order to benefit at risk youth in the St. Louis Area.  So not only is a he a fucking homo, but he's a bleeding heart as well. Possibly a socialist. And I don't want no fucking commies on my football team!

Perhaps I missed something. Where does it say profits are going anywhere but his pockets? http://michaelsam.com/shop/

I do see a difference in cashing in for being a good football player and cashing in simply for being gay. Are you implying Cam Newton doesn't give anything back to the community?

My issue is this completely contradicts his own statement. “I just wish you guys would see me as Michael Sam the football player instead of Michael Sam the gay football player"

Most of the items are in the $20-plus range, and Sam announced a portion of the proceeds will go to benefit at-risk youth in the St. Louis area:

A portion of the proceeds of all Michael Sam gear will be going to at-risk youth in the St. Louis area

Of course I'd like to know what that portion is and what he's doing with the other portion.

Ki-Jana Carter had a major deal with Nike before the draft and look how that turned out.

Point being it's not Sam making a big deal about it. Sounds like the usual grumbling of mainstream white society when reminded that discrimination still exists. It doesn't affect me so why does everyone keep bothering me with it? He should stay in the closet where he belongs, I suppose?

is he cashing in on being gay or using his new-found celebrity status to help others?
