Since you are more in the know of what Cincinnati has been doing this off-season than myself, what areas of play do you believe will be much improved this year and why?

As you know, here are the final NFL rankings in defense and offense in 2004:

Steelers --  1st in Def, 16th in Off
Bengals --  19th in Def, 18th in Off
[post="117101"]<{POST_SNAPBACK}>[/post]
I think outside linebacker will be much improved even if Pollack is just a rookie, based on his speed, kevin hardy was too long in the tooth to be effective anymore, and if Thurman takes over at middle linebacker from Landon Johnson, who led the team in tackles then you have to believe that thruman is going to be a beast. Also this is misleading, this defence only had problems stopping the run, we were a pretty strong pass defence.
what does QB rating have to do with defense rating?  granted the Steelers running game allowed Ben to win more of his games, but he still rated pretty high....

again I will fall back on a rookie qb in the playoffs.....you can't expect them to perform as well as a veteran....as a Steeler fan, I hoped he would be better, but the pressure is even greater than the regular season, which Palmer will find out if the bengals ever make the playoffs.....

Yes, Palmer had a nice game against the Steelers....but who won.....granted it was more because your Defense was weak...for some reason it always seems to me that whoever the Bengals have at QB, they find a way to torch the Steelers....luckily though the Steelers also seem to find a way to beat you guys....
[post="116932"]<{POST_SNAPBACK}>[/post]
Ummm Ben didn`t HAVE to win games or keep the Steelers
in games like Palmer did. Both players started 13 games
in the regular season...Palmer threw 432 passes ...Ben threw
295. Palmer almost had as many completetions (263) as
Roethlisberger had attempts (295) !

Plamer played 2 games in December. He had a QB rating of 121.1.
Those 2 games were against the Ravens and Patriots.
Anyway Palmer progressed as the season went along.
Ben played the same all season until the Playoffs...when he was exposed.

yeah a rookie qb was exposed in the playoffs...imagine that.....my guess is that palmer would have struggled also IF he had been in those games......we will never know though....

the bengals offensive numbers are very misleading... the first 6 games, everyone in bengaldom was thinking that palmer might have been a bust... it wasn't that he didn't have the arm or accuracy, but he was just not quite getting it... then after the 7th game, he took off... his numbers were completely turned around... the biggest thing our o did in the offseason is resign the whole starting crew, and we should get chris perry and peter warrick back from injuries (crossing fingers)...

our defense is definately the key differences... we needed a bigger dt b/c we had two dt's that were very similar last year... both were undersized, athletic type of tackles, but we needed someone bigger to take on some of the blocks and clog some holes... most would say that our dline was our main problem last year, but that is only partly true... they were a problem, but only b/c they didn't give our undersized lb's a chance to make plays... bryan robinson is going to be a key pick up, even if he isn't a superstar... our lb position is extremely upgraded, b/c we should be getting back nate webster and odell thurman will push him as the starter in the middle... david pollack should be a very good olb, but if he isn't as advertised, landon johnson was drafted last year to be an olb... he was moved to the MIK position b/c of nates injury though... we don't even know who is going to start yet at lb, but i do know one thing... the competition will be intense, and if anyone doesn't perform or gets hurt, we have pretty good backups...

overall, we definately upgraded the defense, but unfortinately, until we see work in action, we have little to talk shit about, as far as our defense goes...

No more than you have either,

IF you can find a legitimate #2 now that Burrass is gone
IF you can have someone replace Bell
IF your new olinemen can step up (we dont have that if as we and the chargers are the only two teams in the league with all linemen returning ;) )

Randle El played well in Plaxicos absence last year and Cedric Wilson could be solid (note could be...he did come from San Fran)

The Steelers played without Bell ALL of last season...he is not missed....but I wish a healthy Bell was still a Steeler....too bad he is rarely healthy...

it is O-LineMan...one new guy...a second year tackle....the other 4 are veterans....I am not real worried about this group.....

I said legitimate #2, it's easy to be a #2 in a run based offence. Lets be honest here, our's is more balanced.

And that's the key here isn't it? The Pat's exposed you as a O that if you stop your running game you stop the O. Which will make it interesting to see if our upgrades to stop the run in the offseason have payed off.

And our oline is one of the most underrated in the NFL, Anderson is a probowler, and Jones and Steinbech are probowlers in the making. And the whole line is returning, which will help with consistency. And unlike last year they all are healthy at the beginning of the year which will make Rudi that much more of a weapon. (BTW, who ever said our running game was inconsistent, Rudi only broke the team record for yards... Ill take that kind of inconsistency.)

I also think that Troy and Madeiu will be a interesting fight as to who the best safety in the division is, after Ed Reed. Much like the Carson-Ben fight.

If your honest with yourself you know were a young up and comming team that very well could give anyone in the division a fight for the division title (well minus the browns). This is one of the better division in the league.

Edit: BTW, have you guys signed any of your draft picks yet?
Marvin Lewis picked Carson with his 1st ever draft pick
as a Head Coach. If he felt good enough to pick him
and have him signed 2 days before the draft to build
HIS TEAM AROUND...then I`m sure he`ll be fine.

And don`t compare what the Bengals did in the past to
what they`re doing NOW. They`re 2 completely different animals.
[post="117080"]<{POST_SNAPBACK}>[/post]
Well if Lewis picked him I guess he's destined for for the Hall of Fame. Lewis is an established DC and so far it looks like he's doing a decent job as a head coach. But I think it's a little too early to judge him as a great evaluator of college talent. I will say the Bengals do have a solid team offensively and if Carson could ever become consistent and smart enough to read and understand defenses you could be a legitimate playoff contender. However, I don't think Carson will ever get it and thus he will hold your team back.

The jury is still out on that, but I very much disagree. As his stats in the last part of the season show... he's getting it.
look guys, if you want to have fun and battle back w/ stats, and opinions thats great... it makes my day at work go by faster... if you want to bash me or others on the board w/ every post, then go the fuck away... we would love some cool, homer steelers/ravens/etc. fans on here, and even better if you talk some smack... but we don't insult each other... that just pisses people off and turns into a stupid forum battle... no reason for it to come to that... its as simple as that... be a smartass, come up w/ some funny jabs at the bengals if you want, but if you PERSONALLY insult people for no reason, you will be called out...
[post="117072"]<{POST_SNAPBACK}>[/post]
Oh the irony...

Last time a checked this thread was started for the sole purpose of slamming and insulting Steeler fans on another board. When you get it thrown back in your face you can't handle it. I guess you guys can't handle a handful of Steeler fans throwing a few jabs and some actual football knowledge around. You cowards even banned Sluzilla because you couldn't handle his posts. Some of you guys need to grow a set.
