Ft. Hood shooting was reportedly 'soldier on soldier' incident

A shooting at Ft. Hood that reportedly left three injured Wednesday was a "soldier on soldier" incident without any terrorism link, a senior Department of Homeland Security source told FoxNews.com.

The source, who stressed the information was preliminary, added that there was "currently no [counter terrorism] nexus" and said it appears the shooter "killed himself and three soldiers were wounded."

But there were conflicting reports on how many shooters may have been involved, and what happened in the incident.

A senior law enforcement official told Fox News that it is believed one shooter has been “neutralized,” and authorities believe there may be another shooter in the vicinity.

At least two people were reported to be taken to a hospital at the post but there was no immediate report on their injuries.

“There has been a shooting at Fort Hood and injuries are reported,” the base said in a press release. “Emergency crews are on the scene. No further details are known at this time.”

A worker at Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center, which is located at Ft. Hood, told Fox News they were treating two patients who were wounded in the shooting. The worker says doctors have been told to expect more, although it’s unclear how many more they might be expecting.

“It’s chaos,” a source outside the hospital told FoxNews.com. “I see lots of ambulances coming in. There are helicopters everywhere.”

The sheriff's office dispatched deputies and troopers from the Texas Department of Public Safety to the nearby Texas Army base, Bell County Sheriff's Office Lt. Donnie Adams said.

Fort Hood ordered everyone at the base to "shelter in place." The order was sent on the base's Twitter feed and posted on its Facebook page.

The 1st Calvary Division, which is based at Fort Hood, sent a Twitter alert telling people on base to close doors and stay away from windows.

President Obama has been informed of the shooting and will continue to receive updates, the White House said.

In 2009, U.S. Army Maj. Nidal Hasan, a psychiatrist who had become a radical Muslim while serving in the military, killed 13 people and injured dozens more inside the Army base in Killeen, Texas. Hasan, who represented himself at a military trial after clashing with his appointed attorneys, was sentenced to death in August.

Makes me so sad.... I hate that this shit happens.

I hope all that are injured live... My thoughts are with all involved.

My sentiments exactly.

The information is still confusing from the incident.  Even the people on the base are not sure of what is exactly going on at this point.

It's amazing how much mis-information get out when something like this happens. 2 shooters, shooter in custody.

What's it going to take to get troops the care they need when they go serve in some God-awful situation?

The military is nothing more than a mirror of our society. These type of situations have happened somewhat recently at Fort Knox both on and off base. Every base I've been at has had some sort of incident like this.

There are about 900 programs available for military members to seek help yet every 18 hours a military member commits suicide. Yes, every 18 hours. Are these programs working ? No. Many of the programs have been in place for many years but the suicide rates are not that different.

Soldier Opens Fire At Fort Hood; 4 Dead, Several Injured

UPDATED April 3, 2014 12:15 AM

FORT HOOD (CBSDFW.COM/AP) - A soldier opened fire Wednesday on fellow service members at the Fort Hood military base, killing three people and wounding 16 before committing suicide at the same post where more than a dozen people were slain in a 2009 attack, authorities said.

A Texas congressman said the shooting happened at a medical center. Rep. Michael McCaul, chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, also identified the suspect as Ivan Lopez. But additional details about the gunman were not immediately available.

Also note:  there are a few different pictures of the " shooter " floating around at the various media sites.  One even uses a picture of a former soldier whose name was Ivan Lopez.  That particular Ivan Lopez died as a result of suicide and untreated PTSD 2-3 years ago.  I believe that one was attached to the Pennsylvania National Guard and obviously not Fort Hood.  There are also pictures of an Ivan Lopez who unfortunately happens to have the same name as the shooter and is also a soldier.  Imagine his surprise when people started posting his pic.  The media needs to relax and try to get it right.  The picture above is out of the Fort Hood Herald.

That is an amazingly sad statistic.

That is an amazingly sad statistic.

What is even sadder is that stat is just for military members.  IF you take into account ALL veterans the number is much higher.

http://www.nationaljournal.com/defense/how-can-government-battle-a-suicide-epidemic-among-veterans-20140403

At least 22 veterans commit suicide each day, according to the Veterans Affairs Department. This adds up to more than 2,000 veterans killing themselves so far this year alone, and the military community is facing what advocates refer to as a suicide epidemic.
