Bengals Sign S Danieal Manning

Recommended Posts

Solid.  I'm guessing he'll backup Iloka??

that's what I'm wondering.  I'd think he'd want to start somewhere, but its not like Iloka had a bad year.  Maybe at 31 he understands that he's near the end of his career and just wants to be on a contender.

Thought would be great. Everything I read said inside the box strong safety without coverage skills. If that's inaccurate then it's a great signing.

That has never been a description of Manning's game. Since he came out of college Manning has always been recognizeed as a FS/CB. What have you been reading-that is, other than the notes you jot down right after each psychotic episode?

That's great.  Just what we needed.

I had read several places that he had been being used as a more in the box strong safety in the last few years due to some speed deficiencies.

"As Tim over at our Texans blog, Battle Red Blog, told me earlier this week, the former Texans safety was cut for cap reasons, not skill reasons. I thought he was more of a strong safety but Tim indicates he could play in coverage.

"While Manning dealt with injuries for two of the three years he was in Houston, he's still capable of contributing in the secondary. He's stronger in run support than he is in coverage, but you can do a lot worse on the back end (and the 2014 Houston Texans very well may!) than having Danieal Manning."

That joke about how the Texans could be worse at that position ... they signed Kendrick Lewis earlier. If the Chiefs sign Manning, you're OK with that swap, right?"

"Looking through numbers from the Houston Texans 2012 season, we came across some interesting stats from last season. Here are some interesting tidbits from some information we looked through.     18-The Workhorse of the Defense Danieal Manning was the workhorse of the Texans in 2012. He played in 98.5% of defensive snaps. Only missed 18 plays the entire season including the playoffs.   A Full Defensive Game Manning took 100% of the defensive snaps in 13 games. Departed Glover Quin and Connor Barwin had 8 a piece, J.J Watt had 4, Johnathan Joseph and Kareem Jackson had 3, Bradie…"

Didn't he break his leg last year? At 31 years old, that doesn't heal like when you're 21.

I thought it was ACL. However, my question is how much is this move going to cost ? I thought he wanted 4.5 million. Seems a lot for the caliber of Manning.

Not impressed--this guy is always hurt.

Not sure he's "always hurt"

http://espn.go.com/nfl/player/stats/_/id/9628/danieal-manning

Games Played:

2006 16

2007 16

2008 14

2009 15

2010 16

2011 13

2012 16

2013 6

He's played 13+ games in 7 of his 8 years and last season was the first time I'd consider him missing significant time.  He had a fractuted fibula which doesn't sound all that great, but a break might be better than a ligament tear of some kind I guess.

I don't see how this could be a bad signing.  It's the normal Bengals pickup.  See if we can get good depth with some good coaching.  He was starting until he got hurt last season so he can't suck that bad if he recovers.

Looks great, I had read a few places that he was a pretty strict inside the box strong safety anymore but from what everyone is saying here and what I am finding now it seems like he is more of a coverage safety in the Chris Crocker mold. Great signing if so.

Well, he was always hurt last year!!   :ninja:

Don't really know anything about this guy but whatever, depth is a good thing.

We don't want to pay starter money for depth. Guess I'll wait until the deals details are released.

I seriously doubt he'll be getting anything like $4.5m unless he's DPOY/SB MVP or the like, particularly not if he's injured.  Probably a hefty roster bonus in line just for making the 53 if he's still recovering from it, in fact.

Just like the Bengals targeted him back in January, secondary coach Vance Joseph targeted Danieal Manning when the Texans signed two safeties a few weeks back and he anticipated their old team would let Manning go.

The deal came down Thursday and gives the Bengals an eight-year veteran that could start Opening Day opposite Reggie Nelson as well as potentially another kickoff returner. At 6-0, 205 pounds, Manning, who turns 32 in training camp, squeezes nicely into the Bengals scheme after playing in Joseph's secondary in Houston the last three years.

Joseph says Manning can play in the box as well as in high zones and he's comfortable lining him up in the slot as a nickel corner. Head coach Marvin Lewis always says the Bengals safeties have to play both free and strong and Joseph says Manning fits it all. A second-round pick of Lovie Smith's Bears in 2006 out of Abilene Christian, Manning is also adept playing in a Tampa 2 style.

He joins a secondary that is already steeped in experience and pedigree. Cornerbacks Terence Newman (35),Adam Jones (30), and Leon Hall (29) are all first-rounders, as is the 30-year-old Nelson. Manning has started 91 of his 112 NFL games and started the first six last year before his season ended with a broken leg.

"When we were in Houston, we were No. 2 in pass defense my first year there and three last year, so he's played some good football for me," Joseph said. "He's a good tackler in the box and he can go up and make plays on the ball down the field in traffic. We didn't have free or strong in Houston, we had left and right, so he knows how to play that and coming from Chicago he knows how to play half (field coverage).

"He fits right in line with the guys we’ve got like Terence Newman and Leon and all those guys," Joseph said. "He's a great locker room guy and he loves to practice."

The Bengals liked what George Iloka did in his second season and he won't be easy to nudge out of the starting lineup. But they are looking for more turnovers back there after Iloka led the defense with more than 1,000 snaps and had just one interception. Manning brings 11 interceptions and 10 forced fumbles in a career that began with the Bears' Super Bowl run in '06.

"We're always looking for depth and competition and this guy gives us a veteran presence back there,' said defensive coordinator Paul Guenther."We want guys that will compete and this guy will come in and compete for a job. He's a guy that can run and can tackle and he can cover tight ends."

Manning hasn't returned kicks regularly since 2010, but he had some success as his 26.8-yard average attests on 116 career returns. That would shatter the Bengals current career record held by incumbent Brandon Tate at 24.8, but Manning has returned just one kick in each of the past two seasons.

He is probably making about double the minimum salary, but that won't hurt the Bengals on compensatory draft picks because Manning doesn't figure into the formula since he was released and not an unrestricted free agent.

Love this signing. Adds a ton of depth and flexibility to the defensive backfield.

Bengals front office isn't perfect by any means, but they've been doing a pretty damn good job the last few off seasons and this looks like another of the bargain FA signings they have had a lot of luck with in recent years (Mike Pollak, Dhani Jones, Wallace Gilbury, Terrence Newman, Adam Jones, etc.).

Also, since he was cut, it doesn't take away the 3rd and 4th we should be getting next spring. (On a related note, there was a good article on PFT today about how the Packers plot strongly to acquire as many comp. picks as possible and that it has been a big part of how they have built a consistent winner. So its not just us, the Ravens and Pats. Lots of the top teams take full advantage of this strategy, including the "loophole" that excludes players who have been cut from the calculations.)
