Who would you like to see win the Republican and Democratic nominations?

Glad he cleared that up - heaven forbid anyone be called a *gasp* socialist!

Why is socialism so terrible exactly?  I must have missed that part.  Seems we're ok with it when a huge corporation is faced with bankruptcy, but somehow less so if it means a choice between that same corporation's CEO's 3rd Lambo or free lunches for elementary school kids.

New rule:  Not allowed to call someone a socialist unless you can explain what socialism is without saying "Russia".

It's just a new scary label for conservatives because "liberal" started sounding pretty good compared to their bible-dumb constituency.

What is it that you find so great about socialism?

Short answer? The radical notion that there could be a higher economic goal for our society than making a handful of people obscenely rich.

If you don't think poor people should die for not being able to afford health care you might be a socialist, too.

I would say that I have a fundamental issue with taking from someone and giving to someone else.

Do you have a problem driving on public roads?

If you're actually living off the land in some remote mountain cabin & connecting via satellite then I am impressed and would love to hear more about your lifestyle. (Seriously, kinda jealous).

Otherwise though you are as much a beneficiary of the social contract as the next guy and with that comes responsibility & obligation.  Even in that remote mountain cabin you'd be protected by the full force of the US military, the mountain stream down the hill by the EPA (poorly, maybe, but still), that satellite you're using to look at cat videos wouldn't be in orbit without NASA, and on and on.

What I see - generally speaking, not necessarily in your case - is a broad sense of entitlement from the same people who bawl about entitlements, like all this stuff is a birthright and not something that has to be paid for by, yes, taking from someone and giving to others.

Why people have no problem doing that when it's some senator's private  jet to Aruba or bailing out yet another failed corporation but balk at free school lunches or healthcare is confusing and a little unsettling. .

So then, you don't call the police or fire department when you have a problem?  You don't drive on roads?  You don't watch TV?  You don't use a cell phone or the internet?  All of those things come about because we all take a little of what we make and give it back so that society as a whole can take advantage of benefits.  It amazes me how many of you conservatives spout this inane crap, without really even looking at what you are saying.  Here let's rephrase this so it actually fits what you really mean, "I don't like them taking $100 out of my 50k a year to help make sure that poor people can eat, but I have no problem with the $1000 a year to ensure that Exxon, Mobil and Sunoco can make billions, without paying a cent."

Just out of curiosity, do you think there needs to be a re-evaluation of those citizens currently receiving benefits and also of those not on benefits ?

Thanks for presenting alternative views on the Obama and Bhuda forum...

Maybe once we're done with the re-evaluation of those businesses and NPO's currently receiving benefits/grants/tax breaks.  Wrap them into a reform bill, even.  Line-by-line every tax dollar going to a private person or enterprise.

Senate floor during that vote:

Probably going to hurt but it needs to be done.

Just thought I'd throw this here.

"Let us not despair but act. Let us not seek the Republican answer or the Democratic answer but the right answer. Let us not seek to fix the blame for the past - let us accept our own responsibility for the future." --Speech at Loyola College Alumni Banquet, Baltimore, Maryland, 18 February, 1958, "Loyola College Alumni Banquet, Baltimore, Maryland, 18 February 1958" folder, Senate Files, box 899, John F. Kennedy Presidential Library.

Great sentiment, but unless you're packing a time machine or the reanimated corpse of Theodore Roosevelt/FDR, that is now a pipe dream...

I may be a dreamer but I'm not the only one... Misquoted lyrics from John Lennon.

Why is it a pipe dream to believe that one day, we " can all just get along ? " Paraphrased from Rodney King.

" Vote Homer " ... Direct quote from Numbers... Just the other day.

http://thinkprogress.org/election/2015/06/24/3615327/bobby-jindal-running-president-ran-louisiana/

Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal has spent much of his final year in office outside of Louisiana, with frequent trips to Washington, D.C. and the early primary states of Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina — trips funded by the disgruntled taxpayers of his state. On Wednesday, he confirms the ill-kept secret that he is joining the growing pack seeking the Republican nomination for president in 2016.

As Jindal makes headlines for his controversial remarks about Islam and racial inequality, his record running Louisiana has gotten less attention from voters around the country.

Since Gov. Jindal took office in 2008, Louisiana has earned some dubious honors. The state has the largest gender pay gap in the country, with women making 66 cents for every dollar a man earns.

A study by the Violence Policy Center published in late January found the state also has the second-highest rate of gun deaths in the nation, and the state’s rate of incarceration currently leads the U.S. — and thus, the world. Nearly two-thirds of Louisiana’s prisoners are doing time for a drug crime or other non-violent offense. Last year, Jindal vetoed a bipartisan measure that would have made more inmates eligible for parole and redirected the money saved from their early release to fund rehabilitation programs. Jindal called the bill “a step too far that could put our citizens at risk.”
