|Numbers|
Terrorists are the real terrorists. Police protect us from them. Thank you police. I would like to thank those in law enforcement who follow the legal guidelines and suffer under the restrictions that the civilian community and government places upon them. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. For those that skew the laws for their own agenda, May you spend life in eternal damnation.

Power corrupts, and unfortunately many cops abuse their power. However, a civilized society needs people to enforce the laws that keep the society civilized. I's a problem that has existed since the dawn of civilization, and will continue to exist as long as civilized societies do. It's a fine line to be sure. No one should automatically condemn or excuse police behavior without examining all the facts of individual cases.
SnickyCat
I have wondered often lately if the rise in law enforcement abusing their power is also directly related to the idea that we have too many laws in this country. Far from being the only unnecessary one imo but just off the top of my head for example the seat belt law. It just seems sometimes as if the average well-mannered citizen can be stopped, detained, questioned, harassed, etc etc on the whim of a police officer at any time...and for little or no reason. ColdWarrior
As a former Military Police Officer, I can attest that 1) police work is a series of disasters-waiting-to-happen and 2) the police will always need policing because of the potential for abuse of power. Military police in particular are younger than their civilian counterparts which can lead to immature decision-making and testosterone bravado. I can tell you there were a few times I wish I had the riot gear those dudes were wearing in the video. Nothing like having to enter the home of a drunk, body-builder infantryman who was smacking his wife around - then the wife turns against the police too! It's a screwed up world... ColdWarrior
My service time was cupcake compared to those who served before me (Vietnam) and those who served after in Iraq and Afghanistan. But thanks for the nod. BTW, I went to the D-day Omnimax yesterday with my father-in-law and my two college-age kids. Great history lesson about D-day planning and execution. Not a blood-and-guts deal, but solid historical review with enough explosions to keep their attention.

Is it just "lately" or is it just that citizen awareness has increased due to the fact that everyone is now walking around with what is in effect a camcorder in their pocket ready to roll in an instant coupled with the ability to publish it globally integrated and activated with just a push of a button? These kinds stories have existed far longer then this recent spat of publicized violence from the more disenfranchised among us. Stories that mainstream America refused to believe not just because of the horror of such a reality, but because their reality is just so vastly different. When one grows up their whole life having nothing but reasonably pleasant interactions with the police it's hard to reconcile. and easily rationalized. Just like the Mayor in Maryland who's family was terrorized and his 2 dogs shot during a no-knock warrant, mainstream America is getting a sudden awakening to some stark realities. Or, this really isn't commonplace at all and we are taking a very small number of very negative occurrences and the media and a society that loves to be outraged before they look for actual facts is aggressively passing sweeping judgments? Nope How do you explain that video of how 2 people carrying an AR were treated COMPLETELY DIFFERENTLY with the only difference being the color of their skin? I don't believe you ever chimed in on that thread..

I don't believe you ever chimed in on that thread.. That video was really odd to me for a lot of reasons. 1. Where were they walking? 2. The white video is very short, we don't know what happened. 3. The context of any video is important. Was there an african american with dreads shooting an Ar recently? 4. I think the idea of walking down a street with an AR is crazy and that every person doing so should be treated like the african american was. Obviously very different than the second one as demonstrated by numerous of instances of white people walking around with automatic weapons. Hell, a bunch of them even appeared at one of Obama's rallies when he was running for president. Can you find video of groups of armed African American's walking around not getting harrassed? What if a bunch had shown up at a McCain rally? 3. Really? This is so improbable it's ridiculous. What do you think the odds of this are? 4. Irrelevant. The only thing that matters is that they were treated differently.

T-Dub
3. The context of any video is important. Was there an african american with dreads shooting an Ar recently? There's certainly been white guys with shaved heads shooting AR's recently. I don't think the "probable cause" stuff is going to help your argument.
