Bengals show off depth, balance in win

The Bengals are deep and talented, and they showed off that depth in a 24-19 win over the Chargers Sunday.

With Jeremy Hill benched for his two fumbles, Giovani Bernard ran 20 times for 123 yards. Andy Dalton completed passes to eight different receivers, including backup tackle Jake Fisher on an unbalanced line play. When things are working, they’re just working.

Dalton has lots of weapons. A.J. Green, Tyler Efiert and Marvin Jones caught touchdown passes, and the Bengals defense sacked Philip Rivers four times and intercepted him once. A healthy Geno Atkins is a force in the middle, and he made it a very long day for Rivers and the guys who were supposed to be blocking Atkins.

Carlos Dunlap had 1.5 sacks. Atkins and Wallace Gilberry each had one. Keenan Allen dropped a punt after the first series of the game, the Bengals recovered and immediately scored and they forced the Chargers to play from behind all day.

The Bengals would love to drive the offense through Hill and let the power run game open things up elsewhere. Especially with Eifert back to health, they have plenty of options. And when Hill dropped a third-quarter pitch and was benched, Bernard came on and produced. He had a 26-yard run to set up the touchdown pass to Eifert.

There’s a lot of season left, and that whole not-winning-the-big-one thing will follow Dalton and coach Marvin Lewis until they win a really big one. But the Bengals have a lot of players, and when whole this offense can keep up with just about anyone.
