Battle of Ohio could be Bengals romp

The schedule maker couldn't have been less kind to the Browns.

Cleveland hasn't had much go right recently, losers of five of the past six, with a banged-up quarterback Josh McCown out - Johnny Manziel will start - and two key defensive backs, Joe Haden and Donte Whitner, having been concussed. The Browns might be short-handed at wide receiver, too.

And now, on Thursday, they head into the Jungle to face the unbeaten Bengals, who come off a signature victory at Pittsburgh.

''I would definitely say it's a little tough,'' said Browns DB Tashaun Gipson. ''It's a little different. You would ideally like to be coming off of a victory going into a short week, but that's what we get paid for: to be professionals. You just have to put each game behind you win, lose or draw. Each opponent is different and each outcome could potentially be different.''

Potentially. But hardly likely as Cincinnati takes aim not only on an AFC North crown, but the top record in the conference.

''We have put ourselves in a really good position,'' quarterback Andy Dalton said. ''When you look at the schedule, you want to win every game that you play, and we have been able to do that so far. We just have to keep the same mentality that we have had and we will be in good shape.''

Cincinnati (tied for No. 2, AP Pro32), is an 11-point favorite against in-state rival Cleveland (No. 27) on Thursday night. Doesn't matter when they play this one, Bengals will cruise.

BENGALS, 31-16

General Ackbar (Star Wars) says: IT'S A TRAP!!!

I don't see this as a trap game. Trap game means a team is looking forward and overlooks their immediate opponent. With all the "prime time games" talk, trying to stay undefeated, a poor offensive performance last week, and not having a game for another week and a half,  I just don't see the Bengals not being clearly focused on playing well against the Browns. It seems to set up more as a statement game than a trap game.

yeah this game has me a little worried for the Bengals, because this team dose not have a very good track record playing on Thursday night.

63-3 Bengals

We put on a clinic.

I don't know. Coons is pretty good. 63-9?

Hate to say it, but that's what a lot of us were thinking last year.  But they're diferent now mentally. And they have Burdock, Eifert, MLJ, and a healthier Green.

Agreed.

This would have been a trap game if the Browns hadn't already 'trapped' the Bengals last year at home.  There is no way they overlook the Browns this year.  The real trap game is next week, facing a terrible Texans team the week after a divisional 'revenge' matchup and the week before the Bengals square off with Quitter and the Cardinals.

A trap game could be defined as just looking past an opponent. Or this could be part 1 of 2 trap games looking ahead to the cards. But this might be more appropriately described as a hangover game.

The Stealers Hangover is more appropriate if you want to classify the game.     Which on many occasions it has been true for the franchise.

However,  the Battle of Ohio stands on it's own.     Would anybody declare the Browns to be the Bengals equal these past few years?   No.   However, in the last 5 meetings the Browns have managed 3 wins during a period in which the Bengals should easily have whooped them like the last meeting and what people are predicting for tonight's meeting.

Al Lerner in the background.

Great Moments In Ohio Sports History, #1 - The Browns move to Baltimore

Twenty years ago today - November 5, 1995 - Cleveland Browns owner Art Model, together with Executive VP Al Lerner and Maryland Governor Parris Glendening, announced that the Cleveland Browns would be moving. The Baltimore Browns (later renamed "Ravens") would begin play in 1996 at Memorial Stadium until a new football-only stadium would be completed adjacent to Camden Yards.

After threatening litigation, the city of Cleveland would later be given an expansion franchise in 1999. That new team, ironically enough, would be headed-up by Al Lerner, the same man who engineered the Browns' departure to Maryland and upon whose private jet the final contracts with the Maryland Stadium Authority would be signed while sitting on the tarmac at Baltimore-Washington International Airport. Without Lerner spearheading the effort, the Browns would never have been able to move to Maryland.

Gov Glendenning: "This is truly a proud moment in the long and rich history of this proud city of Baltimore and this state of Maryland as we welcome the Baltimore Browns!"

Paradoxically, Browns fans have immortalized Lerner - who has since passed away - by wearing jerseys that bear his "A.L." initials on the sleeve. The patch was subsequently removed following the 2012 season by new owner Jimmy Haslam - the 5th owner since the teams' founding in 1999.

Since the relocation, the original Browns franchise has been to two Super Bowls, winning World Championships both times.  Meanwhile, the current Browns franchise has been a poster child for mismanagement and pathetically poor on-field performance.  Having posted only one winning season in their 16 seasons of existence, the expansion Browns are currently tied for last place with a 2-6 record in the AFC North.

To commemorate this anniversary, the expansion Browns team will be playing against Ohio's senior franchise, the Cincinnati Bengals, founded by Paul Brown, who also founded the Baltimore franchise. Unlike their junior rival to the north, the Bengals are currently leading the division with an undefeated 7-0 record and look to go 7-1/2 games up on the current Browns with a victory on national TV tonight.

Have the expansion Browns (1999-present) reached the point where we can confidently say they are worse than the Bengals teams from 1991 (Paul Brown's death) to 2003 (Marvin Lewis' hiring)?  On the one hand, the Browns did have two winning seasons and a playoff appearance during their period of awfulness, but on the other hand, they are at 17 years and counting (with no end in sight) of pathetic play while the Bengals morass only lasted 12 years.

The 90 Browns were worse than the 90 Bengals.     That franchise simply got a "get of jail free" card because of  the move.

The Ravens teams in 1996, 97, and 98 were all shit and would have been shit in Cleveland too if not worse.

They haven't won a division since 1989.     It's like trying to tell which piece of shit looks prettier, but ONE of the most annoying things about Cleveland with the move was they tried to keep the Paul Browns years and bury the shitty years.

The 90 Bengals can lay claim to a Division title and 1 playoff win.   The in the same time span 1 playoff win and then the team moved.
