Marvin Lewis: Bengals won’t trade A.J. McCarron

Posted by Michael David Smith on March 21, 2016, 3:53 PM EDT

If any team is thinking of making a trade offer for Bengals backup quarterback A.J. McCarron, Marvin Lewis has some advice: Save your breath.

Lewis told PFT’s Mike Florio at today’s league meeting that if a team calls with an offer for McCarron, the Bengals will respectfully decline.

After Andy Dalton suffered a season-ending hand injury in Week 14 last season, McCarron came in and played fairly well, with six touchdowns and two interceptions over the Bengals’ last four games. It’s possible that some quarterback-needy team could view McCarron as an upgrade over what it has now, but the Bengals think McCarron is too valuable as Dalton’s backup to trade away.

Lewis’s interview will air on the Tuesday edition of PFT Live

In my mind, everything is negotiable. I think this is just Marvin's way of saying don't expect us to trade McCarron for anything less than what we want to get in return. I'm sure even Marvin couldn't say no to an offer of a first round pick this year no matter how much he loves his back-up QB.

Exactly. If someone wanted to give us a Carson Palmer type deal or better, you can't say no because you want a good backup the next 2 years.

If teams are fishing around trying to get him for a 3rd rounder or something, I think they aren't going to get anywhere. Which is probably what Marvin is saying. Better blow them away with a huge offer or forget about it.

I'm betting Denver would part with a 1st rd pick for McCarron.

That would be a good option for them but I doubt they do it. They can get Kaepernick at a lower cost in draft picks but higher cost in cap space. The 24 mil AJ would save them over the next 2 years would buy a pretty good FA at some position.

It's interesting....if McCarron stays a Bengal this season and never sees the field due to a healthy and productive Dalton does his value go down from what it is right now?

Yes, definitely. He'd be closer to a new contract and a year away from showing what he can do on the field. His trade value is at its max now unless he plays a lot and plays well during 2016.

What could the Cincinnati Bengals expect to get in a trade for AJ McCarron?

When the Cincinnati Bengals relate they aren't interested in trading backup quarterback AJ McCarron, what's implied is the NFL team isn't interested in trading the formerAlabama star for what other clubs will offer. Cincinnati likely would trade Andy Dalton and make McCarron the Bengals' starter if another team would give them a handful of first-round picks and a Pro Bowl lineman for the Red Rifle.

What could the Bengals expect to get for McCarron if they traded him? Not much, really, which is one reason they won't.

That isn't a reflection on McCarron's ability; it's the going rate for backup quarterbacks, even when they're being brought in with a chance to start for their new teams.

Over the previous five offseasons, 10 backup quarterbacks have been traded (along with six QBs who would be considered a starter in the previous season). One of the 10 backups was exchanged for another player. Of the other nine, only one drew a draft pick from the first four rounds in return.

That one came on July 29, 2011, when the Philadelphia Eagles sent Kevin Kolb to the Arizona Cardinals for cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie and a second-round pick in the 2012 NFL Draft. The deal probably would have been made earlier, but the NFL had a lockout that summer.

Kolb had become the first NFL player to throw for at least 300 yards in each of his first two starts and started five games filling in for Donovan McNabb in 2009. The Eagles traded McNabb to the Washington Redskins for a sixth-round pick after the season and made Kolb their starter for 2010.

However, Kolb suffered a concussion in the season opener and lost his spot to Michael Vick, although he came back to start four games while Vick was hurt in 2010. Satisfied with Vick, the Eagles dealt Kolb to the Cardinals, who were in distress at quarterback. After Kurt Warner retired at the end of the 2009 season, Arizona used three starting quarterbacks -- Derek Anderson, John Skelton and Max Hall – in winning five games in 2010.

With Peyton Manning's retirement and Brock Osweiler's departure to the Houston Texans in free agency earlier this month, the Denver Broncos were left with Trevor Siemian at quarterback.

Kolb wound up starting 14 games over two seasons for Arizona, which traded for Carson Palmer after the 2012 season. Even though Palmer had been the Oakland Raiders' starting QB in 2012, Arizona gave up only a sixth- and a seventh-round pick to get him.

As with Kolb, four of the other 10 traded backups -- Matt Flynn, Matt Schaub, Ryan Mallett and Matt Cassel -- went to their new teams with a shot at the starting quarterback spot. They started a combined total of 13 in their first seasons with their new clubs.

Some of those trades were salary dumps. McCarron is on a cheap contract for 2 more years. McCarron has a better college and pro resume than Osweiler or any of this year's QB draftees. So it's possible a team might want AJ to be their starter. If so, they'd have to pay the price for an NFL starting QB which is a first round pick or comparable package of picks/players.

you people are completely delusional. Mccarron is going nowhere, and nobody is going to even consider trading a high pick for him

Why not? He seems like a more proven and safer option than Wentz or Lynch and a more affordable option than Fitzpatrick or RG3. Some team is going to take them and expect them to become a solid NFL starter. McCarron had 80 and 90 yard TD drives at altitude at Denver on Monday night in a high stakes game. That's better than the league MVP did vs the same defense.

He basically won a playoff game. If that game wouldn't have gone to shit, do you think that would have put him in higher demand?
