Stealers recognize the Bengals playoff game went too far

BOCA RATON, Fla. -- More than two months later, the heated Cincinnati Bengals-Pittsburgh Stealers playoff game still feels like a fresh memory.

The league's proposed rule to eject players after two unsportsmanlike fouls of various kinds reminds of that wet January night in Cincinnati when two NFL teams blasted each other with their helmets.

The game couldn't be escaped at this week's NFL owners meetings.

On Monday, NFL vice president of officiating Dean Blandino dissected Stealers linebacker Ryan Shazier's hit on Bengals running back Giovani Bernard, deeming the helmet shot "illegal." On Tuesday, New York Giants owner John Mara said this week the league has a "sportsmanship problem."

Stealers coach Mike Tomlin joined the party, saying Tuesday he's all for promoting better on-field decorum at this week's owners meetings.

Tomlin was hesitant to address the Bengals game shortly after it happened because his team was still in the playoffs. He chose not to acknowledge the Bengals' criticisms, including outcry over Shazier's hit and cornerback Adam Jones saying Antonio Brown faked a concussion. Bengals linebacker Vontaze Burfict is suspended for the first three games of the season for several egregious hits, including his vicious one on Brown in the final minute of the 18-16 loss to Pittsburgh.

In a Week 14 matchup, the teams nearly brawled at midfield before the game even started.

"It was unfortunate, obviously," Tomlin said. "I don't think any of us wants that. It's not good for football. We dealt with it as best as we could."

By Wednesday, the league will decide whether to implement the rule or table talks until the next meeting.

With Bengals-Stealers, what felt like bad blood in January feels like the spark of constructive conversation -- at least for a week.

"The goal is not to eject people from the game," said Tomlin of the rule proposal. "The goal is to change behavior.”

Most of these problems would be eliminated if teams like the Bengals would take the Stealers season-ending cheap shots and not say or do anything about it.  It was when the Bengals decided enough was enough that the problems started.

My positon exactly.   It only became an issue when the Pittsburgh Pussies started to have to experience the receiving end of all the cheap ass crap.  Funny thing....the only cheap shot of the whole bunch was the last one.   All the others  were clean as Gain washing powder.  Further, according to Whines Ward, NOW IT'S PERSONAL.   It's been personal on our end for years if not decades.

Why is it that all this shit regarding our team's supposed transgressions or complaints are always addressed AFTER the fact? "Oh, maybe that Shazier hit was dirty after all...GOING FORWARD we will address that". Like that fucking helps us now. We live in a Groundhog's Day of repetitive bullshit that only comes back on us when we reciprocate, not when the source of the angst (STEALERS) does anything. Because, you know the drill....

How nice that Blandino "dissected" the Shazier hit and deemed it illegal. No shit. We all knew that right when it happened. Remember all the bullshit on every sports show right after the game? All the bullshit about how the Bengals and their fans were out of control, throwing harmless plastic water bottles at Ben, Burfict clipping Brown with his shoulder for a borderline penalty, and PacMan brushing up against an official while being continuously taunted by Porter? You know that savage chaos supposedly brought on by the Bengals? The Shazier hit was worse than all of it combined, and in fact, was the catalyst for all of it. Thanks Blandino, you assmunch, for deeming it illegal after all the bullshit press has died down.

You know what this is kinda like? The government banning "assault weapons" when they don't even know what one is, but because it "looks scary", we must ban it! Same with the Williams hit. Throw the flag every time if it looks like a big scary hit, ask questions later.

Man, when their coaching staff goes all Thug-Life in the middle ofthe same playoff game, you haven't learned any lessons.  Don't go out and start any thing, but when they do - you end it and end it HARD!

The Bengals end it by winning.  Period.  Until they do this is the shit sandwich that will be served by the press.

This never gets old.  If they win big games the refs will stop making bullshit calls that keep them from winning big games?  Great plan! It's like the NFL equivalent of "stop hitting yourself".
