The Bills took advantage of their vacant roster spot signing veteran free agent return man Brandon Tate Tuesday.

The Bills are still finalizing their 53-man roster with the season opener just five days away. On Tuesday morning they played host to free agent Brandon Tate and he was signed a short time later.

Tate, 28, has made his living in the NFL as a kickoff and punt returner. The veteran return specialist and receiver played the last five seasons in Cincinnati.

Tate (6-1, 195) has averaged 24.6 yards per kick return and 9.2 yards per punt return in his career. The eight-year veteran has three career returns for touchdowns. Last season his number dipped a bit from those averages to 22.9 per kick return and 6.3 per punt return.

Buffalo signed Reggie Bush this summer with a primary return role as one of the main reasons for bringing the 11-year veteran in. With the Tate signing it could be indication that there might be a bigger role for Bush on offense than initially anticipated.

Tate is expected to practice with his new teammates this morning.

The Bills also announced that the team has signed CB Marcus Roberson to the team’s practice squad.

Good for Brandon. We didn't want to give him the guaranteed contract but someone else was willing. This situation probably could have played out a little better like how the Ravens waived Forsett and then gave him a raise not subjecting any young kids to waivers, but Brandon didn't really add much besides security at returner. Almost a non-factor in the passing game.
