Trade #9 to the Texans, go OL at #25

Recommended Posts

The current Bengals roster is probably in the best shape of all of the teams picking the top 10 and any player that is selected will probably be a backup for at least a year. Yes this team could use some help at DE, RB, etc...but the main area of concern for this roster currently is the OL. There are no OL prospects worthy of the 9th pick in the draft, but if the Bengals were to trade down with the Texans to the 25th pick they could get one of the few good OL prospects in the draft and get an extra pick or two in the draft to address the depth needs.

The Texans are the best trade partners because they need to get one of the top QB prospects in the draft this year after Romo unexpectedly retired. They traded Osweiler in anticipation that Romo would be their QB this season, now they are going into the season with Tom Savage as their starting QB. If they stay at 25 there is a very good chance that the top 4 QB prospects will be gone and they will be left with 2nd and 3rd tier players to choose from. Trading up to 9 for the Texans makes a lot of sense as it would allow them to get a top QB prospect and they could use the pick they got for Osweiler as bait.

Bengals get the 25th, 89th, and Browns 2nd Round pick in next years draft and the Texans get the 9th overall pick. It's a win-win scenario for both teams...get er done Tobin.

If that were to happen the Bengals could get one of the top OT prospects and provide competition for the LT, RT, or RG positions. I'm most fans would feel more confident about the Bengals chances if they had someone other than Ced O for the LT position, another first round OT pick might be overkill but necessary. Forrest Lamp or Cam Robinson should be available at #25 and those guys could play LT, RT, or RG if needed.

Yes they do, got it in trade for Osweiler.

The Texans traded their 2nd round pick and Osweiler to Browns.  They do not have the Browns 2nd round pick next year.  And this trade scenario would just be terrible.  Drop 16 picks in the 1st round for the 89th pick and imaginary 2nd rounder next year.  Horrible value, at least make this realistic.

Sounds great for the TExans,  move into top 10 and only give up a late 1st and 3rd and a variable 2nd--that they don't even have.      Stupid as hell for the Bengals....

I have read that almost every team from #2 to #15 is interested in moving down.

It's just that kind of draft class. Great depth but not much in the way of elite talent.

In theory, would it be nice to move down and pick up an extra 2nd rounder or whatever? Absolutely. But it's probably a longshot given that there aren't many players teams are looking to trade up for.

Agreed on the value front.....definitely need to make it a realistic trade. We'd need their next years 1st rounder and this years and this year 2nd rounder( if they have it)

Obviously picks are worth whatever both trading teams believe they are worth.  Although going with the "conventional" trade value chart...

Pick #9 = 1,350 points

Pick 25 = 720 points

Pick 89 = 145 points

2nd round picks range from 270-580 points.

For the sake of argument, let's say the Texans threw in their own 2nd round pick.  This would mean if this deal took place:

Bengals give up 1,370 points

Texans give up between 1135 - 1435 points

As much as I love the idea of trading back, gaining extra picks, and drafting someone that plays OL...  I don't think there is enough sweetener on the deal to entice the Bengals.

Why would you give up the 9th best player in the draft to reach for an OL at 25 that may or may not be there? And even if their target is still available, it's going to be a guy who would've been a 2nd rounder if this draft class wasn't so weak for OL. Besides which, why the sense of urgency if they're not likely to start anyway?
