such diminishing skills...

This stat by itself is pretty meaningless, how many of those targets were completed against him? Here is a list of the top 25 CB's in 2016, https://www.profootballfocus.com/pro-top-25-nfl-cornerbacks-this-season/, and guess who isn't on the list.

16. Cincinnati Bengals (29)

Top overall grade: S Shawn Williams, 80.6 (No. 32)

Top coverage grade: S George Iloka, 79.2 (No. 31)

Top run-defense grade: S Shawn Williams, 79.5 (No. 27)

Most snaps: CB Adam Jones, 1,058

Cincinnati’s secondary wasn’t nearly as good as it was in 2015, but it wasn’t a major issue, either. Only No. 4 cornerback Darqueze Dennard earned a below-average grade on the season, as he allowed an 86 percent completion percentage into his coverage. However, no one else really graded much above-average either. The Bengals’ highest-graded played turned out to be Shawn Williams in his first year as a starter, as he took over for the departed Reggie Nelson (Oakland). Dre Kirkpatrick also played better as the season wore on; he finished with the eighth-lowest yards per cover snap allowed for cornerbacks. Outside of Adam Jones, though, the Bengals have a relatively young

Here more evidence that just because teams only targeted him 8.2 times a game it doesn't mean he's actually a good NFL player that is worth the bad press and headaches:

A number of defensive backs have contributed to this drop, but the biggest drop-off is coming from Adam Jones. A Pro Bowl selection last year after playing like an elite corner, Jones has been average at best this season, as evidenced by Pro Football Focus ranking him as their 87th-best cornerback this season out of 116 eligible players.

In fact, after Dre Kirkpatrick’s big game on Monday vs the Giants, Jones is now the lowest-ranked Bengals corner (Kirkpatrick is 74th, Josh Shaw is 50th, and Darqueze Dennardhasn’t played enough snaps to be ranked).

That shows just how far Jones has fallen this season, and part of it has to do with him trying to make up for other players’ mistakes and play hero ball, as he told the Cincinnati Enquirer.

Jones's play fell off a cliff last year, one meaningless stat doesn't disprove that.

PFF keeps track of some interesting stats, but their individual rankings are a complete joke.  They tried to claim that Dre Kirkpatrick was the 114th ranked CB in '15, yet he ranked in the top 30 in every objective stat I coiuld find (success rate, yards per target, completion percentage allowed).

The way the PFF individual rankings work player A could play fewer snaps then player B, mess up more often than player B and still be ranked ahead of player B.  The formula is flawed, but the rankings are also very subjective.  A player can do his job on a play and receive anything from a "0" to a "2" based on totally subjective basis.

I have not seen all of the stats on Adam or other CBs for '16, but I know he only allowed 6.1 yards per target.  That would have ranked about 12th in '15.

Yeah, those PFF CB rankings make a lot of sense.  Our CBs are ranked 50th, 74th, and 87th, yet our pass defense was ranked top 5 in the league in pass efficiency and 11th in yards and tds allowed..

Good thing we had such a great pass rush and elite cover skills from our LBs and Safeties to cover up for all the complete garbage playing CB for us.
