The collar on the black jersey is now entirely orange, and the collar will be black on the orange and white alternate jerseys.

The cut of the jerseys is different, too, this season, but that is the case for every team in the league.

The 50th season patch is not considered a uniform change.

For those wondering why the club maybe didn’t introduce a “throwback” jersey for the 50th season, it’s not as simple as just bringing in a new look for a year.

First, it would be considered an "alternate" jersey, so the orange jersey would have to be eliminated. Then, for any team to introduce a new uniform there needs to be a two-year advance notice given to the league and manufacturer. And, once that change is made, it has to stick for the next five years and is the only change that can be made.

So, for instance, the Bengals would have had to start the planning process for a uniform change in 2017 with notice in 2015. And then no jersey or part of the home or away uniforms could change at all again until 2022.

An exception to all this is the all-white “color rush” uniforms, which will be back in 2017 for the Thursday night football games (this was a league-wide initiative with Nike). Though the club has yet to formally announce wearing them, it plays Houston on Thursday, Sept. 14.

That jersey will also feature an all-black collar, the lone alternation to that look.

The club will once again wear orange helmets with the jerseys.

The league and NFLPA do not allow alternate helmets for safety reasons and, unlike other teams that do change logos on their helmets, the Bengals do not use stickers for its striping. The helmets are orange and painted with black stripes.

In the offseason, the Philadelphia Eagles considered submitting a rule change proposal to allow for alternate helmets The club will once again wear orange helmets with the jerseys but ultimately tabled that proposal before it could come to a vote in the March owner’s meetings.

Paul and I are starting up a new weekly feature called “Bengals Xtra” or “BX” for short – in the mold of colleague Jason Williams’ Politics Xtra over on the news side.

We kicked it off two weeks ago with a deep dive into the upsides and pitfalls of potential Tyler Eifert and Vontaze Burfict extensions, and this week Paul followed up his excellent profile of the Brown family with the unique pairing at league meetings of Mike Brown and Dallas owner Jerry Jones.

It’s not always super serious in practice.
