Bengal History week 6

Continuing tribute to Bengals 50th anniversary.

Ironic that week 6 is an off week this year because in 50 years the Bengals only have one win in week six against a team that made the playoffs.

The 1985 Bengals had the #3 scoring offense in the league, but finished 7-9 due to a 26th ranked scoring defense.  The Giants 6th ranked scoring offense was just a tick below the Bengals, but the Giants paired it with the #5 scoring defense in the league and were favored even though playing on the road.  True to form the Giants defense shut down the Bengals offense allowing only 199 yards.  Meanwhile Phil Simms set records for Bengals opponents that still stand today with 40 completions and 513 passing yards.  However Simms only threw for one td and one of his 2 ints was returned for a td by James Griffen at a crucial point in the game. The Bengals had jumped out to an early 21-0 lead and still led 21-3 at the beginning of the third quarter.  But the Giants scored 13 straight points to pull within 20-21 and had the ball back when Griffen took his pick 24 yards for a score.  Rodney Holman added a 5 yard td catch to make it 35-20 and the Bengals held on to win 35-30.  James Brooks accounted for 141 (59 rush, 82 receiving) of the Bengal 199 yards and scored 2 tds.  The defense sacked Simms seven times (2 each for Ross Browner, Eddie Edwards, and Ron Simpkins) and forced 4 turnovers (2 ints by Griffen).  Boomer only threw for 193 yards, but he had 3 tds, zero ints, and a 127.3 passer rating.

The Bengals also have a tie against a playoff team in week six, but I refuse to discuss that one.
