Bengals vs. Stealers referee assignment, recent history point to flag-filled affair

The Cincinnati Bengals and Pittsburgh Stealers seem like two rivals steamrolling toward another violent collision.

After bumping the game to a late-afternoon kickoff and seeing Tony Romo slapped on the call, the NFL assigned one of its best as head referee: Bill Vinovich.

Vinovich, a Super Bowl veteran, last called this encounter in December 2016. Bengals fans will remember its 15 total flags, including taunting on Adam Jones, unnecessary roughness on Vontaze Burfict and Pat Sims and three overall flags on Dre Kirkpatrick. Pittsburgh got hit for 104 yards of flags, including three unnecessary roughness calls.

NFL Network’s Aditi Kinkhabwala pointed out the recent history here:

With Burfict back in the fold for the Bengals, and Stealers safety Mike Mitchell coming off a few questionable plays, fans know to expect plenty of laundry on the field.

The history and NFL throwing one of its best at perhaps the most violent rivalry in the league right now only puts an exclamation point on what should be another classic encounter between the two.

Flags, make the game dull.  Guaranteed there will be plenty of them in the beginning just to make sure they know they will not put up with any misconduct.... on the Bengals part. (fixed)

I would say there are flags on at the very least 80% of all kick off and punt returns.

(just an estimation and as it seems to me ... stats not necessary)
