Colts Bengals Good Bad and Ugly

At the stadium the refs would say "74 is an eligible receiver" and Andre Smith would line up next to him.  The jumbotrom lit up with the message "They're running right" or so it seemed because that is what they did every time.  And it never worked.

Man- they have been doing that since what - the Coslet days? I don't think it's ever worked.

They made a decision to not let TY Hilton beat them. He was averaging about 19 per coming in. He had 2 for 15 yesterday. Could they have done a better job on the TE? Yeah, but they accomplished the mission they set out to.

I'm 100% certain that the gameplan wasn't to let Jack Doyle catch 5 first down passes and a TD just to keep a specific receiver off the stat sheets.

The Bengals have struggled against TEs for years now even when we have a top defense. No real surprises here.

How many teams are good at defending TEs?  They are typically too big for most DBs and to fast for most LBs.

That's kind of a bad argument man. First of all, if that were true, wouldn't we be seeing tons of TEs with all of the receptions, yards, and TDs each year? Regardless of that not happening, we've also been below the league average covering TEs for quite a while.

Let's check out Jack Doyle's stats this year.

2 rec for 41 yards

8 for 79

2 for 16

5 for 27

7 for 50 and a TD

6 for 44

12 for 121 and TD

I don't know man. How many other teams are good at defending Jack Doyle? It's just frustrating when we almost got beat by an awful team and what was basically 1 mediocre player by himself. We likely lose the game if Dunlap doesn't make that play. Let's also not pretend Doyle was catching those balls in garbage time or anything either, it was a close game and we couldn't cover an OK TE to save our lives.

I do agree with you in the sense that our scheme and the players we target in the draft and free agency pretty much make it so we shut down WRs more than the average NFL team, but it's never, ever, ever in the game plan to get smoked by a guy like Jack Doyle. It just isn't. It's nonsense to say that it's fine because it was in the plan and every team struggled against these miraculously athletic and uncoverable TEs. I get the jist and honestly do agree with the round about point of what you're saying, you're just making some really weird arguments in the process.

The Bengals have actually played some good games against TEs this year, again, it's just frustrating to see us almost lose another game due to not covering a TE very well. There's no need to make odd excuses for it either, it is what it is. They sucked at covering the TE on Sunday, period, and it wasn't intentional.

He (Spitman Jones) started in the secondary.

From the snap counts it looks like he's in a rotation with WJ3.

Despite Adam Jones (44) starting, William Jackson (41) ended up playing quite a bit. It seems the team was rotating the two players more than before Jones got injured against the Bills in Week 5. Dre Kirkpatrick (62) also left with an injury, but he returned soon after.Darqueze Dennard (54) also played extensively, but at one point the Bengals had Jackson in the slot in place of Dennard.

Jones and WJIII have been (statistically) our best CBs in coverage this season. Would be nice to see them on the field more often at the same time.
