Bengal history week 9

Recommended Posts

Continuing series in honor of Bengals 50th season.

1974...A 17-10 victory at home brings the Bengals(6-3) within half a game of the eventual Super Bowl Champion Stealers (6-2-1). Ken Anderson sets NFL record for most consecutive completions (20) and highest single game completion percentage (90.9% 20-22).

1978...Bengals enter game 0-8 with the worst offense in the league (only 4 tds in 8 games) by far.  Oilers enter the game 5-3 but coming off a game where they handed the Stealers their first loss of the season (Oilers and Stealers would meet in the AFC Championship game that year).  Bengals offense scores as many tds in one game as they had in the previous 8 and pull off a stunning 28-13 victory.  Rookie sensation earl Campbell gets 102 rushing yards for the Oilers but is held out of the endzone.  As a team Bengals outrush Oilers 189-137 and outgain them 436-255.

1979...Very next season Bengals have 1-7 record facing 6-2 Eagles.  Again they record a shockingly easy 37-13 upset.  Archie Griffen gains 153 yards on only 10 touches (6 carries for 103, 4 catches for 50).  Pete Johnson adds 113 yards (86 rush, 27 rec) and 2 tds.

Cool, anything happen in the 80's, 90's or 2000's? :)

Only two week 9 victories against playoff teams.

1996 Jacksonville, 28-21.  Not a big upset because the Jgas came into the game 3-5.  But I guess I should have mentioned it since we are playing them this weekend.  Carl Pickens and KiJana Carter each had 2 tds.

2009 Baltimore, 17-7.  That was the game where Chris Henry got injured and our entire offense went to shit for the rest of the season.  Here are our offensive rankings through the first 9 weeks and then the rest of the season

.......................week 1-9........10-17

total yards..........12.................32

pass efficiency....13.................21

pass tds.............12.................27

pass yds.............18................30

Those numbers are even more shocking when you realize that our first 8 games included 6 games against teams ranked in the top 7 in the league in defense(#2 Packers, #3 Ravens (twice), #5 Stealers (twice) and #7 Broncos), while our last 8 games included 6 against teams that finished in the bottom half of the league in total defense.
