Offensive Line idea for 1 offseason

Recommended Posts

Football outsiders tracks OL stats. I am not sure how good it is but have a look: http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/ol

This is certainly not a 100% plan but here are some thoughts

Giants: Likely to fire coach. Average OL numbers

The Giants OL ranks 13th in Running games, 13th in Passing.

Their coach is Mike Solari-Coached for 41 years 29 in the NFL: http://www.giants.com/team/coaches/mike-solari/57832a7b-12b6-4be5-a71e-acf32c642e26

The Giants have 4 Free Agents along the offensive line

1. Center Westton Richburg-6'4 300-Colorado St 4th year: 50 career starts. Out with a concussion on the IR. Future unknown. NOTE: Hometown Louisville. #13 Center by PFF

2. T/G Justin Pugh-6'5 311-5th year: 63 career starts. Back issue this year. #55 T PFF

Then they did what we should have done and shored up their line with veteran signees on one year deals

3. Right Guard DJ Fluker-6'5 345-5th year: 65 starts. #58 G by PFF

4. Left Guard John Greco-6'4 318-10 year: 71 starts.

Of the other teams where there may be firings

Bears: 25th running, 26th passing: http://www.chicagobears.com/team/coaches/Jeremiah-Washburn/d944d39c-1c53-41f1-aff5-e80d5da0d3e8

No Free Agents

Colts: 26th running, 32nd passing: Ex Head Coach: http://www.colts.com/team/coaches/Joe-Philbin/db7c5613-8bb6-404b-9969-79dfae61ed7e

Free Agents: LG Jack Mewhort, OSU: 6'6 305 4 years 45 starts, Finished last 2 years on IR with a knee injury

Bucs: 21st running, 11th passing: http://www.buccaneers.com/team/coaches/George-Warhop/b1999e20-3017-4089-badf-7e5bf28853bb

Free Agents: RG Evan Smith: 6'2 308 8th season 48 starts

Browns: 8th running, 20th passing: Our ex TE's coach: http://www.clevelandbrowns.com/team/coaches/bob-wylie/b4f1ce63-1ded-4675-beb3-dad7a12b435b

No free agents

Cards: 23rd running, 17th passing: Cards OC Has been an OL coach: http://www.azcardinals.com/team/coaches/harold-goodwin/31c80544-3178-40c5-aff1-e32f1a621cba

Free Agent LG Alex Boone: 6'8 310 8 seasons 80 games started

Not a ton of talent and quite a bit of risk with the top talent coming off injuries but some interesting names nonetheless.

You could get Richburg and Pugh from the Giants, with their coach, add them into Boling and a first and 3rd round pick and that might remake the line. Both Pugh and Richburg is probably too Rich for our team. So how about Richburg at Center and Mewhort at RG. We want to load up in the draft on picks and can draft a future RG if we don't think there is one on the roster. Maybe the line looks like?

LT McGlinchey Rd 1 Ogbouehi 20
LG Boling 20 Westerman 20 Redmond 19
C Richburg-Giants Johnson 19 Dielman 2020
RG Mewhort-Colts DP Hopkins 19
RT Fluker-Giants Fisher 19 Perkins 2019

Big 'Dre is better than Fluker.

Richburg would be fine if we can't land Jensen.

I think one of the low R1/high R2 LTs end up being better suited for immediately starting in the NFL than McGlinchey, but I wouldn't hate the pick to see if he can hang here.

Haarrrdddd pass on Mewhort. Dude has some serious issues with that knee, this wasn't just a freak accident that put him on IR.

His knee wasn't properly fixed last time. He might have a long term issue but could be a short term bridge to our next guy. Makes a ton of sense for a team not looking to play a ton of rookies on the line but looking to have a ton of rookies on the line.

Fluker graded very well at tackle when he was there. Better than Smith if I recall.

I mean our RG play has been bad enough that I just want to see any other name at that spot at this point. You've mentioned Hubbard in your posts, and while I don't think he's very good, he played some OG in high school and college so I'd give him a shot there before Mewhort.

When Fluker was where? Alabama? Lol I hope that's not what you're talking about. It's not like Fluker is a guy that's only been around for a year and we aren't sure what his development will be like. He wasn't good in San Diego and he isn't good in NY. With Fluker on the line the Chargers were widely known as the team with the worst OL in football for his last couple of years there. He wasn't the diamond in the rough on the line either, he was contributing to them being awful. 2017 Andre isn't amazing but if he keeps up playing reasonably well then that's just 1 less spot we need to worry about an upgrade. DJ Fluker is awful.
