Bengal history week 12

Recommended Posts

1973....Back when the NFL season was only 14 games the Bengals enter week 12 at 7-4 and battling for a playoff spot.  Their opponent was the Minnesota Vikings who were 10-1 and on their way to the Super Bowl that season.  In one of the most impressive victories in Bengal history they completely dominated the Vikings 27-0. Relying on a rushing attack with 3 different players gaining at least 50 yards and averaging 5 per carry (Essex Johnson 79 and 8.8, Boobie Clark 67 and 5.1, and Lenvill Elliott 57 and 5.2) and an efficient Ken Anderson (106.2 rating on only 17 attempts) the Bengals outgained the Vikings 332 to 201.  The Bengal defense held Hall of Fame QB Fran Tarkenton to a 69.9 passer rating and Pro Bowl running back Chuck Foreman to only 38 yards on 11 carries.  Neither team would lose another egular season game and both would lose to the Dolphins in the postseason.

Bonus stat regarding the '73 season...The Bengals ended just 15 yards short of having 2 RBs rush for 1000 yards (Johnson 997 and Clark 988), but even more impressive Clark and Johnson combined to average 192 yards from scrimmage per game (rushing plus receiving).  Most people consider Icky Woods and James Brooks to be the best RB duo in Bengal history but in their best season ('88) they only averaged 155.2 yards from scrimmage per game.

1982.....Pete Johnson rushes for 129 yards and a td against the leagues #2 rush defense while Ken Riley ties the Bengal record with three interceptions returning one for a TD.  Bengals pound the Los Angeles Raiders 31-17 handing them their only regular season loss that year.  Both the Raiders and the Bengals would lose to the Jets in the playoffs.
