"The Raiders tried to lure Detroit defensive coordinator Teryl Austin to Oakland.

It didn't work. The respected defensive mind ended up becoming Cincinnati's defensive coordinator, NFL Network reported on Monday afternoon. He was deep in talks with the Bengals, but the Raiders went after him anyway.

The crazy part: New Raiders head coach Jon Gruden didn't have that job title available. Paul Guenther is set to be his DC."

Someone tell me why this guy is such a hot commodity?  I'm looking at Detroit's defensive stats from last year and they're solidly in the 20's for points/game, yards, penalties, passing. 18th vs the run. 27th ranked overall.  The only stat that jumped out as even average was 3rd down percentage where they were 15th.  Granted I think we have a better roster, and stats aren't everything, but they're something.  The way people are talking I thought Detroit had a top-10 defense, or at least close to it.  Someone give me a reason to be excited about this hire.

According to Phil Simms Austin should be a head coach..I believe  that he is our HC in waiting behind Marvin Lewis..

I posted his biography in another thread... he’s done well with the talent he had. https://forum.go-bengals.com/index.php?/topic/81321-coaching-staff-changes/&do=findComment&comment=1554136

It's not his last year's stats.

Because just a couple of years ago they were #2.  This year they were hit hard by injuries and were still one of the better turnover teams.

Interesting tidbit I read on Austin is that he coached defensive backs on three teams that reached the Super Bowl ('05 Seattle, '08 Arizona, '12 Baltimore).  His defenses in Detroit were mostly "meh" except for 2014 when he had a dominant line featuring Suh, Fairley, and Ziggy Ansah.

Thanks for the info.  Nothing is really jumping out at me, and I do seem to remember those Baltimore defenses weakness being the secondary, but it will be interesting to see what he can do with our guys.  I find the idea of Pacman as defensive team captain absurd & think he has been a piss-poor influence on DreSwagYolo's buffoonery, so a DC with (presumably) strong ideas about DB's could be helpful.  Maybe he'll even cut Pac before his annual offseason embarrassment.

All for giving dude a shot but let's not get ahead of ourselves with this "future HC" talk.

He's gotten interviews the last 3 years, a coach out of football for ten years just tried to steal him, we like to hire known commodities.

Here's one of my posts from another thread. Austin is a DB specialist and I think he could definitely help our guys out back there. He has been a part of some heavily penalized defensive units over the years, but some of that time with the Ravens they weren't penalized because of the secondary as much as the LBs and whatnot and he was the DB coach at that time, so take those numbers FWIW. His DBs seem to always be coached to play the football though, you won't find many years where a player (or two+) directly connected with Austin aren't among the league leaders in PDs. His Ds have also generated some turnovers which we could always use some help with. I think our defense is absolutely more talented than the Lions has been over the past few years so I'm definitely interested to see what he can do here. Gotta have talented players to succeed and maybe we can even add another playmaker or two between FA and the draft as well.

A good DC still needs some good players. I would have rather had a couple other guys but I'm willing to give Austin a shot here. I'm not going to dig back into what the guy did 15 years ago but before the Lions DC he was the Ravens secondary coach for a few years.

In 2011, Baltimore's defense was #4 in passing yards per game, #1 in pass TDs (11 which is very, very low for a full season), and #1 in passer rating against

In 2012, #17 in passing yards but T-#2 for pass TDs with 15, #11 in passer rating against. They also won the SB this year

In 2013, #12 in passing yards, T-#14 with a bunch of other teams giving up 25 passing TDs, and #11 in passer rating against

So again a little regression here, but their defense also went from Ed Reed and Bernard Pollard as the safeties to James Ihedigbo and rookie Matt Elam in 2013.

The bad news, they were the #14, #9, and #1 penalized defense in the league during his stint there as secondary coach. Lions were #23, #29, #4, #11 penalized defense from 2014 - 2017 (in chronological order) when he was their DC. His defenses have also given up some of the highest yards per play in the NFL over the past 2 seasons.

I'll end with a little bit more good news. His secondaries know how to play the fucking football. Lardarius Webb, Cary Williams, Ed Reed, Glover Quin, Darius Slay have all been among the best in the NFL in PDs in the various years he was the secondary coach in Balt and DC in Detroit.

I won't give him 100% of the credit or blame for this stuff, but it's random things I've found while looking into his resume. If there's 1 thing to be excited about it's what he could do with our secondary. Iloka looked like a borderline elite safety the 1 year he played the ball over the big hit, Dre Kirk had a great 2016 before a mediocre or worse 2017, maybe Austin can get their heads straightened out.

It's actually the opposite. His secondaries in Baltimore were extremely highly ranked and regarded. He's considered a bit of a DB whisperper from what I understand. If he wants to teach DreK and Iloka especially ball awareness, that would be super swell.
