Tyler Eifert: Does he stay or does he go?

Recommended Posts

I can't see giving Eifert big money or many years.  One year of good money?  Sure.  Top 5 TE money?  Nope.  Several years?  Nope.  He is in the "prove it" category.  Would like to give him one more chance to stay healthy, but big money is a no-no.

Have to agree that Dalton is pretty much a first read QB.  Still, he is a Pro Bowl caliber guy when surrounded by a  competent line and good receivers.  Much bigger problems than Dalton to fix on the Bengals.

He's not the 2nd best player Andy has ever thrown too, maybe in 2015 but not currently, and I would say AJ Green is the best red zone threat Andy's ever thrown to, not Eifert.

Outside of his 2015 season, Eifert has 7 TD's in 4 seasons; he's not the first ballet HOF'er some people are making him out to be. The most yards he's ever had in a season is 615, he's definitely replaceable. Fans want the team to build around weapons that actually suit up and play consistently, not a guy that has missed 22 out of the last 32 games, has had 3 back surgeries, a knee surgery, and hurts himself running routes in practices...he's Chris Perry 2.0..aka Mr. Glass.

People are judging Eifert based on what he did over 2 years ago, and that was a statistical anomaly more than the norm for his career.

Ok so you say he's not dalton's 2nd best player....then fail to name 2 players better? you named AJ green, who yes is Daltons BEST redzone player to throw 2.....who is his 2nd? Efiert......

Tyler Eifert's injury history muddles potential new contract with Bengals

INDIANAPOLIS -- Cincinnati Bengals player personnel director Duke Tobin indicated at the NFL scouting combine Wednesday that the team would like to see tight end Tyler Eifert return. He also admitted he had no way of predicting if the sides could come to a deal.

"If we can get Tyler Eifert back, we'll see what the offseason holds for him," Tobin said. "If he can get on the field and stay on the field, he's a pretty dynamic weapon, too."

Eifert is preparing to become an unrestricted free agent when the new league year begins March 14. It's unclear what type of market there will be for the 27-year-old when he hits free agency, but Tobin thinks there will be one based on Eifert's potential.

2018 NFL Free Agency

"My guess is there will be interest around the league in Tyler Eifert because when he's on the field, he's a difference-maker, "Tobin said. "But we'll see as it goes as to what that interest level is and what Tyler's thoughts are. That will matter as much as anything."

Potential is essentially what teams must use to gauge Eifert, because he has limited game tape from the past two seasons. His best season was in 2015, when he made the Pro Bowl after catching 52 passes for 615 yards and 13 touchdowns. He also caught five touchdown passes in 2016 despite playing in only eight games.

Eifert was a large part of the reason the Bengals sealed a fifth consecutive playoff berth in 2015. But Eifert has played in only 10 games since due to ankle and back injuries. Cincinnati's first-round draft pick in 2013 has never played a full season, and hasn't played in more than 13 regular-season games since his rookie year.

"The biggest component of it, is that he's got to get on the field and do it. He knows that more than anybody," Tobin said. "We'll see what the future holds in free agency. It's hard for us to predict who else is going to be a player in that and what ultimately the contract will look like. Those are things we're working through as the offseason goes on."

The Bengals haven't been back to the playoffs since losing Eifert for the better part of the past two seasons.

"We were keenly aware of his absence, and yes, it affected the way our offense worked," Tobin said. "When he was there, he provided the spark that we needed. I think he and [quarterback] Andy [Dalton] had a real rapport."

Tobin called Eifert a "difference-making player" when he's on the field, but it's his injury history that will likely give teams pause. The Bengals tend to be cautious when it comes to contract guarantees, and any new deal in Cincinnati would likely come loaded with incentives based on Eifert's availability.

"We'll see what we can come up with," Tobin said. "And the interest has to be mutual and it's got to work for him, but he's a guy that we value."

Once again you are going off of outdated stats, Eifert's 2015 numbers are very relevant because he hasn't come close to replicating them before or after that season. Eifert had one good year out of five, his stats from 2015 were more of an aberration than the norm. Eifert's career stats are 127 rec's, 1537 yds, and 20 TD's for 5 years, this is definitely replaceable and quite frankly nothing special.

As for who was/is better than Eifert in 2016 Brandon LaFell led the team in TD receptions with six to Eifert's five. In 2017 Kroft was the second on the team with seven TD's, while Eifert had zero. To push this false narrative that Eifert is some indispensable piece of the offense is ridiculous, the guy had one good year in 2015 and has been mediocre at best for the majority of his career. So to answer your question the combination of LaFell and Kroft have been better red zone and receiving options for Dalton in the past two seasons, which is what really matters.

Things change rapidly in the NFL, in 2015 Ryan Fitzpatrick was one of the best QB's in the NFL as he was tied with future HOF'er Aaron Rodgers with 31 TD passes and Nick Foles was one of the worst QB's in the NFL. In 2017 Fitzpatrick was barely hanging on to a backup job and Foles was the MVP of the Super Bowl.

He’s never done that much anyway.

He’s a first read QB.

If what he thinks he sees pre-snap is not really there, he bolts from the pocket.

...there was no pocket.

The Bengals did not place the franchise tag on tight end Tyler Eifert. Bengals have said they want him back, but Eifert's injury history makes that decision complicated and certainly doesn't make any potential contract a simple one to work out. If they can't get a deal done soon, he'll be an unrestricted free agent. It's hard to tell what the market will be for Eifert, who barely played the last two seasons. Some teams are understandably wary about his injury history.

Was it even a remote possibility we would franchise tag Eifert??  $9.846 million for a guy who has played 10 games in the last 2 years?  Does Katherine Terrell smoke a lot of pot?  Is Katherine Terrell smoking hot??
