Bengals now have $10 million more to spend after NFL sets salary cap for 2018

Recommended Posts

CINCINNATI (WKRC) - The Bengals have needs on the offensive line, linebacker and even to add a safety and possibly a backup quarterback this offseason either through the draft or free agency (or both), and they now have $10 million more to spend on free agents after the NFL set the salary cap for the 2018 season.

The cap has been raised from $160 million last season to $177.2 million in 2018, which means teams have $10.2 million more to spend in 2018.

The salary-cap number is negotiated by the NFL and NFL Players Association using a formula that takes into account multiple factors, including revenue from broadcasting rights, premium tickets and merchandising.

According to SpotRac.com, which tracks individual player contracts and provides how those contracts apply to the salary cap each year, the Bengals have $35.4 million in salary cap space for 2018, and that takes into account money allotted for the 11 draft picks the team has this year.

Keep in mind that the Bengals may use some of that money on contract extensions (Carlos Dunlap and Geno Atkins are unrestricted free agents after the 2018 season).

They could also add some salary cap space, too, by releasing veterans like defensive end Michael Johnson, wide receiver Brandon LaFell and possibly even cornerback Adam Jones.

The free agency signing period begins on March 14 and Local12.com will provide a preview of what may transpire on March 13.

Geoff Hobson just crunched the number using the new cap info and they have $2.34 to spend in free agency after accounting for all the implications supposed dumbasses like us don't understand.

Don't we need to re-sign Andre Smith first?  I completely forgot about him.  Just how fucked are we??

Picking on Mike Brown/Hobson and our cap is funny and absolutely warranted, but we don't really have "$10 million extra". The Bengals have been projected to have around $35M for months now because everyone has assumed the cap was going to increase by almost the exact amount that it did officially.

This doesn't really change anything for us or any other team for that matter, websites have been using cap numbers assuming this increase since the end of the last season.

Mike Brown remembers when the Salary Cap was only $37 Million. You could fill up your tank for under a dollar, and a loaf of bread was only a nickel. You had to sweep the practice field for German landmines every morning before putting on your leather helmet, and it was glorious.
