Trade for Josh Garnett

Recommended Posts

The Niners are reportedly ready to cut their 2016 1st round pick  Joshua Garnett an OG from Stanford.

He was a pick of the previous regime that has fallen out of favor with the new GM  and coach. If Garnett can play RG and is healthy then why not trade for the guy.

He would be an upgrade and solidify the right side of the line. Get er done nameless GM.

I think he would cost too much. I like the idea, but we, like America, are not an endless penny bank.

He's worth a mid to late round pick and when you can print your own money what real value does it really have besides the intrinsic value you create for it.

1. If the 49ers are going to cut him, why trade for him? Wait till he's cut and then sign him

2. Even if he's fallen out of favor, it he was any good, Kyle Shannahan would find a way to use him somewhere on the offensive line, even as depth. If they're willing to cut a 1st round pick from just 2 yeas ago,  that means he must suck horribly.

1. You trade for him to ensure you get him, believe it or not Cincy isn't the desired or ideal destination for most NFL players. Name one free agent that was reasonably good and had multiple options  that has publicly stated that he wanted to play here in the past 10 years... I will wait

2. Garnett was drafted by Chip Kelly and Trent Balkee, both of those guys gone and with them is their style of play. Garnett is a physical Mauler that can pass pro, however Shannahan and Lynch are looking for a more zone blocking guy that can get out on screens etc... they may keep him if he can fit their scheme.

Garnett could step in a be a 10 year starter at RG and really help solidify the interior of the offensive line.

No way.  If SF is willing to give up on him this quickly, he sucks.  The did the same with Taylor Mays.  2nd round pick they traded after 1 year to us and never amounted to much.

The Bengals got Mays a for a 7th round pick and he contributed on special teams and started a few games, not bad for what was essentially a 7th rounder as far as the Bengals we're concerned.

Not sure if Garnett and Mays is an apt comparison though, two totally different players that play different positions.

The guy doesn't suck, he was a first round pick that was in a wacky scheme with little talent around him in his rookie year and got hurt last year. He's capable of playing at a high level if he's in the right situation.

LOL, we got Mays for a 7th round pick AND HAD TO PAY HIS 2nd round contract.  Everyone always seems to leave out that little detail about assuming the current contract.

If Garnett were capable of playing at a high level, he wouldn't be leaving.  If he is not capable of adapting to a scheme, he probably is none too bright either.

Keep in mind, he is on a rookie contract.  2 years left on a rookie contract with an option for a 3rd year.  The 111th highest paid offensive lineman and the 49ers STILL want to get rid of him.  They don't even think he has backup potential for 2 years.

Mays's contract was next to nothing for the Bengals, most rookie deals are front loaded with guaranteed money and their base salaries are low. When a player is cut or traded the team that drafted the player pays guaranteed money/signing bonus. Mays never more than $800k while he was here and that was his last season in 2014.

Talented players get cut and traded all the time, the best center the Bengals have had in the past 15 years, Rich Braham, was cut after getting drafted in the 3rd round. Also, the Bengals just traded for Cordy Glenn who will be the starting LT for years if he can stay healthy.

Garnett is due 1.3 million this year and 1.7 million next year, that a steal for a starting RG.

To be clear, the 49ers aren't considering moving Garrett because he lacks talent, the coaching staff and front office that drafted him is no longer in place. The new regime has a different scheme and he's not a good fit. He's lost 25 lbs to become more of the type of player they want him to be so maybe he sticks around.

is there some reason to believe that one of Westerman/Redmond can't be very good options at that spot?

is there at least a reason that they've already been written off?

just curious..

He's one, he also was born and raised in Cincy and grew up a Bengals fan. His family lives here and those factors are some of the top reasons why he came here.

Who else you got.

You asked for one, I gave you one.  Too late to change the rules.

Is this where I bring up Condi Rice as the next NFL commissioner again?  We need an NFL version of Kenesaw Mountain Landis to clean house.  Unfortunately, unlike major league baseball, the NFL was founded in corruption so there's no sense of scandal that needs to be put right to keep the fans & more importantly bettors engaged.
