Geo Bernard Record Book Milestones

Recommended Posts

It’s easy to forget about Giovani Bernard.

The most dynamic running back on the Cincinnati Bengals roster is having a quiet offseason compared to the budding hype for Joe Mixon, which makes sense.

But Bernard looks poised for a breakout year of his own after a slow 2017 where he spent most of his season working his way back from an injury.

A fresh Bernard in what could be a more explosive offense puts him in line for perhaps a few Bengals franchise records, as the team’s official website pointed out:

38 _ Giovani Bernard’s second-place lead on Archie Griffin for most catches by a running back with 230.

68 _ Catches Bernard needs to break James Brooks’ RB record of 297

953 _ Yards receiving Bernard needs to break Brooks’ RB record of 3,012

That last one probably isn’t happening, but 68 catches isn’t too outlandish. Bernard’s career high is 56 as a rookie on 71 targets, but a new-look offense with Bill Lazor leading the way could work him in even more.

If Mixon is the supposed every-down back, it’s hard to imagine the Bengals still don’t find other ways to get Bernard on the field. He’s too explosive with the ball in his hands for the coaches to ignore, especially after last year’s disaster.

There aren’t many Bengals franchise records ready to fall in 2018, but if Bernard is making headway in his areas it means the team is probably performing quite well.

Not sure why the article writer thinks 953 yards more for Bernard isn't all that possible. Shit, one big play and he's 10% there already.

I was thinking the same thing. If Mixon is taking the bulk of the carries, I wouldn't be surprised if Gio gets a lot of opportunities to catch the ball out of the backfield. He's shifty enough to break a few long ones at that.

Imagine what his numbers would look like if we weren't trying to replace him all the time.   At this point in his career it makes more sense but there have a been a parade of less-reliable, less-productive backs ahead of him most of the time he's been here.
