Its when they are 2 outfielders and 3 arms off that we actually notice. The Reds have a $110 mil total payroll, the Red Sox have a $236 mil payroll. The best players end up at the same clubs. Teams like the Reds are simply glorified farm teams and schedule fillers. The Cubs pay their 25 man roster $146 million, the Cardinals $119 mil, the Reds $60.5 mil. Sure, Milwaukee is having an ok year with a payroll as low as ours, they have made the playoffs twice in 35 years. The Pirates have a low payroll too, they have not won their division in 25 years. Mike Trout is considered one if not the biggest star in baseball. According to Q Score which is a company that studies the public's awareness of players for endorsements, he is as well known as NBA reserve forward Kenneth Faried who plays for the Brooklyn Nets. There is a reason the All-Star game had its lowest ratings in history, the product and league is garbage.

Combined with the guaranteed salaries it's ridiculously easy for a small market team to dig themselves a hole it can take a decade or more to fix. Even when they do manage to put a championship-caliber team together they've got maybe 2-3 seasons at best before they get picked clean by major city AL teams. Look no further than the Baltimore Orioles' 32 year old first baseman Chris Davis. In the 3rd year of a 7yr $161 million contract, he is batting .158 and has scored 18 runs on 323 plate appearances. They still owe him $84.5 million,..guaranteed. Nobody will take that contract over.
