OC options and then some

Recommended Posts

The amount of potential OC options for  Zac is staggering. I will try to break it down here. As I get time I will add the rest of the staff. I put them in order of who I think is most likely.

My preference would be to have it be someone from the Rams to implement their system here. They don't lack potential candidates. (One thing this shows is we can expect similar guys with tons of OC experience throughout the system---at least I hope)

1. Shane Waldron, Rams Passing Game Coordinator, TE Coachhttps://www.therams.com/team/coaches-roster/shane-waldron. Inexperienced but knows the Rams offense and could help implement it here. Interviewed for the head coaching role here. McVay allows his assistants to leave and interview if it's for a playcalling position. So all we have to do is let him call plays. Could also coach TE's? 2nd year with the Rams.

2. Jedd Fisch, Rams Senior Offensive Assistant: https://www.therams.com/team/coaches-roster/jedd-fisch. Lots of recent collegiate experience at Michigan and UCLA and also has an OC stint with the Jags in 2013-2014. Fisch is probably a candidate to replace Taylor as QBs coach. He would come with a year of experience in the Rams offense. First year with the Rams

3. Aaron Kromer, Rams Run Game Coordinator, OL Coach: https://www.therams.com/team/coaches-roster/aaron-kromer. Ohio Native and Miami of Ohio graduate, Kromer was the Bears OC in 2013-2014. 2nd year with the Rams.

The other obvious one are his family connections. They would be solid fits but wouldn't know the system.

1. Press Taylor, Eagles QBs Coachhttps://www.philadelphiaeagles.com/team/coaches-roster/press-taylor. He is an up and comer as well. He has been in the Eagles system since 2013 working his way up to QB coach. A great article about the 2 here: https://www.si.com/nfl/2018/12/06/zac-taylor-rams-press-taylor-eagles-head-coaches. He is credited with suggesting the Philly Special.

2. Mike Sherman, Montreal Alouettes Head Coach: https://en.montrealalouettes.com/2017/12/20/mike-sherman-named-head-coach-montreal-alouettes/. Sherman is Taylor's father in law and was his first coach at Texas AnM. He was the Head Coach for the Packers and an Offensive Coordinator for the Dolphins, Texans and Seahawks.

His previous head coaches as a player and Coach

1. Bill Callahan, Redskins OL Coach AHC: https://www.redskins.com/team/coaches-roster/bill-callahan Callahan was Taylor's Head Coach when he was a pretty good QB at Nebraska. He reportedly wants out of his position in Washington. He has been an offensive coordinator with the Cowboys and Raiders and head coach with the Raiders and at Nebraska. Frank Pollack coached with him in Dallas.

2. Joe Philbin, Packers OC: https://www.packers.com/team/coaches-roster/joe-philbin Philbin ended the year as the Packers Interim Head Coach. He has experience coaching the OL and is interviewing for the Vikings OL job. He was the Head Coach in Miami for the entirety of Taylor's time there.

Tangential Connections

1. Darrell Bevell, Ex Vikings and Seahawks OC: Bevell coached under Sherman. He is interviewing for the Jaguars OC job but could have a role as a QBs coach.

2. John DeFelippo, Ex Vikings and Browns OC: He was the QBs coach before Press in Philly and coached with Callahan on the Jets. He is interviewing for OC jobs but if he didn't get it could get be an option for a QBs coach role.

He coached with Dan Campbell in Miami. Campbell took over as interim HC when Taylor assumed OC duties I believe.

Would make a lot of sense. Campbell has the experience to help Taylor along. He's got an enforcer reputation.

I don't see any past OC experience for him though.

And he is already an assistant head coach with the Saints.

Press Taylor... cool name.. the firm of Taylor & Taylor = winning

seriously though.. the way Foles has played late in the year after Wentz inevitably gets hurt is impressive.

This is all new to me.. I am so used to the same old shit with my Bengals that I don't even know what to think.. I am jsut happy we are having these discussions...

Didn’t consider this but Foles is likely available this offseason. He has absurd escalators in his deal I think.

Foles is going to make bank somewhere else.

I'd love to have him but he is going to be too expensive.

13.5 dead money and 12 million cap hit if they get rid of him.. I would imagine he is staying in Philly

He built his deal to be traded or play. I can't remember the details but it's not that simple.

On this list I think assuming Sherman is a no go and we want to put in the STL system her, Kromer is the guy for me. We need a OC with experience since Taylor doesn't have it on the NFL level and Kromer had his Bears O in 2013 as the #8 overall O.

I can be talked into any of the 3 Rams guys and I like your logic around why the other 2 might be better fits than Waldron. I assume Callahan end up on the team in some capacity. AHC Senior offensive analyst or something. He is connected to both Pollack and Taylor.

I was just looking at this:

https://www.spotrac.com/nfl/philadelphia-eagles/nick-foles-9898/

I am not really sure how all that shit works...

He has a super strange deal. Basically if he is the starter he gets paid like it. If he isn't he doesn't stay. http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap3000001000068/article/nick-foles-expected-to-be-a-free-agent-after-the-season

Who are the potential DC candidates?

Digging now and it seems sparse despite his ties with guys who have long coaching careers in Callahan, Sherman and Philbin.

So far this one makes the most sense. https://www.therams.com/team/coaches-roster/joe-barry

I have done next to no research on him so I don't know what those D's were ranked but he was the Redskins DC in 2015, 2016 and Lions in 2007 and 2008.

One of his mentors had a tie to Rod Marinelli who is the Cowboys DC. Frank Richard would be someone I would love as DC. He is rumored to be the top guy in Miami.

Marinelli is 69 but there is a chance he moves aside for Richard to take over DC in Dallas but still wants to coach a bit. Probably an outside chance.

I can't find any big DC connections to Sherman, Callahan or Philbin that would be available. They mostly had older guys who are no longer in the league.

Not that I want him but did we let Lazor go?

I don't think his name has been mentioned specifically as being released. I thought  I saw his name mentioned as interviewing with another team though.

Filling out the coaching Group. The biggest questions on offense are probably QB and WR coach, both of which are commonly filled with up and coming future OC types. We seem to have capable guys there already. I would bet there are guys in those spots with ex OC experience, but that's hard to project without knowing how the OC carousel lands.

OC: Aaron Kromer-Rams: I would be fine with any of Kromer, Fisch, Waldron or Taylor. This is Zac's offense and any of those 4 I think would be a good argument to run that offense. Kromer probably knows more about the Run than Zac does and it would be a good blend. Loved Jamie's argument about him.

Senior Offensive Analyst(?) AHC: Bill Callahan. Getting veterans around Zac will be especially important and Callahan has a solid coaching resume and was Zac's coach at Nebraska. He also coached with Frank Pollack in Dallas. Seems like an ideal fit.

QB: Alex Van Pelt: I don't have any thing against Van Pelt but I don't really think he lands here. I think this could be Press, it could be guys like Darrell Bevell or John DeFelipo if they don't get jobs elsewhere. Both have ties to Zac's mentors.

RB: Jeff Nixon: Nixon is currently the Co-OC and RB coach for Auburn. I consider this a promotion. He might not. He coached with Zac for years in Miami.

https://baylorbears.com/coaches.aspx?rc=81&path=football. Stump Mitchell coached with Mike Sherman on the Seahawks and was on the fired staff in NYJ last year. He is a secondary option.

WR: Ben Johnson:  Johnson was Taylor's assistant QB coach for the Dolphins when he was there and was the WR coach for Miami last year. Keeping Bicknell makes some sense. The top of the WR unit looks great. I am not sure we have seen the development from the bottom. The WR job seems to be one given to up and comers and future OC's. I don't know that, that is what Johnson is. https://www.miamidolphins.com/team/coaches-roster/ben-johnson

TE:Tony Sparano Jr: Currently the Jax assistant OL coach. Sparano's father had ties to one of his mentors but I can't remember which one. Only 32, seems like an up and comer.

OL: Frank Pollack: I like him and like him even more with

Have to add Gary Kubiak to the mix now as it seems like he won't be the guy in Denver. Taylor is friends with Kubiaks on who is the assistant QB coach in Denver. Could be Kubiak as OC and Kubiak JR as QB coach.

Apparently he is probably not coaching this year?

Press Taylor for OC, Dalton gone, and Foles signed via FA, would be a wet dream for me.

You’re gonna wake up with some very blue balls.
