There is 'increasing chatter' about Bengals QB situation

Recommended Posts

The Cincinnati Bengals have entered the Zac Taylor era, and the first-year head coach definitely has some work to do. The Bengals have posted a losing record in each of the last three seasons, and have witnessed a mid-year firing of a coordinator the past two years. Marvin Lewis is finally gone, and it's time to look towards the future.

Taylor's first task is to utilize the NFL Draft to build his roster, and he's sitting pretty with 11 total picks. His first pick comes at No. 11 overall in the first round, and many expect the Bengals to pick a defensive player. Taylor is an offensive coach, and with the Bengals having one of the worst defenses in the league last year, it would be smart f0r him to cover his bases on the other side of the ball. Cincinnati may decide not to do that however, and surprise everyone by taking a quarterback,

During a Thursday morning appearance on ESPN's "Get Up!", NFL insider Adam Schefter labeled the Bengals' quarterback situation as the one that no is talking about. Behind the scenes however, he says that there's "increasing chatter" that Cincinnati could make a move for a quarterback in the first round.

Quarterback Andy Dalton has played fine during his eight-year career, but he only has two years left on his contract and there is no guaranteed money remaining for him. He belongs to the previous coaching staff, and with Taylor being an offensive coach, he may look to start off his career with someone he wants under center — not someone he adopted.

Sitting at No. 11, the Bengals should have plenty of options if they elect to select a new signal caller. Former Missouri quarterback Drew Lockshould be available, and it's possible that Ohio State's Dwayne Haskins will be available as well.

In four seasons at Mizzou, Lock threw for 12,193 yards, 99 touchdowns and 39 interceptions. He set a single-season record last year when he threw for 44 touchdowns in Missouri's 13 games. Clearly this guy can sling it, and it's impressive that he put up these kinds of numbers against the best competition in college football.

Recent reports indicate that Haskins' stock is sinking, and Peter King even says that he could be the fourth passer picked in this draft.

Last season as a Buckeye, Haskins threw for 4,831 yards, 50 touchdowns and eight interceptions, good enough for Big Ten Player of the Year.

He broke the two important all-time Big Ten single-season passing records, surpassing Drew Brees with 50 touchdown passes. Haskins also has the ability to throw off script and from different arm angles with different trajectory and touch. At his best, Haskins beats you with his short and intermediate accuracy, his quick release, and his quick decision making. He may be the best quarterback in this class, and if he isn't, he's definitely No. 2 behind Kyler Murray.

Schefter made sure to indicate that there's no guarantee the Bengals will draft a quarterback, but there are no such thing as guarantees in the draft. Nobody seems to be talking about the Bengals drafting a quarterback, and they could end up going in that direction.

Until Peter King dropped the news that Haskins was dropping in the draft last week, I assumed that there was no chance of him falling to us in the first round.  If he does fall and we do take him, I will be surprised but not against it.  It's a concern that he's only a one year starter at OSU, but any chance at a long term QB has to be considered seriously.

Smoke and mirrors.  Find another team who is desperate for a QB and announce to the office employees that your thinking of taking a QB.  Gets around the league like wildfire and eventually everyone seems to be riding the bus alongside every other "insider."   Problem is the bus driver is Tobin.  There is simply a matter of collecting a large amount of picks in the "sweet spot of the draft."  Trading down to a QB hungry team or a team that needs to be thinking ahead for franchise QBs getting ready for retirement.

Just a short list....

Broncos, Giants, Jaguars, Bucs, Dolphins, Saints, Redskins, Titans, Chargers, Patriots, etc...

Supposedly there are 9 workable QBs on the market for a new job and it is possible they fill in for one of the above mentioned teams or one not yet mentioned.

If one of the top 3 QBs is there when the Bengals are on the clock, you can take it to the bank we'll trade (unless it's a non "value" for the pick in question...)
