Hey Central Ohio folks

Recommended Posts

In conjunction with the 100th anniversary of the NFL, they will be broadcasting 3rd day picks from all of the original NFL cities, including Columbus. They’re doing it from the Ohio History Connection by the fairgrounds on Saturday and they’re also offering a free kids football clinic. There’s currently an exhibit there on Ohio’s sports history also. I wish I could go, but I’m doing something even nerdier that day.

At one time, the NFL league offices were in Downtown Columbus at the corner of Broad and High.

You're welcome.

BTW-there's a wide receiver from ODU that may be drafted or signed as a FA. His agent was able to get him into OSU's Pro Day.

He holds the ODU for most receiving TDs with 38.

But if he doesn't get drafted, he'll be OK. He has a 3.9 in accounting and is heading to law school.

More lawyers, nothing wrong with that.

The Panhandles played for their first years at Indianola Park--doesn't appear there was an actual stadium, more like a field with seats around it. They finished at Neil Park--which a decade after they disbanded, became Red Bird Stadium...later Jet Stadium...later Clipper Stadium...later Cooper Stadium. Not sure where this one sat--probably in the pre outfield of Red Bird, but away from the boneyard.

Their first game ever, was against the Triangles in Dayton--the first ever NFL game. Not just the first in Ohio...the first--period.

Had forgotten about the old Columbus Panhandles. They were in the league same time as the Canton Bulldogs and Amish's Dayton Triangles.

Good stuff. Thanks for posting this!

My wife's grandfather used to draw colored pencil drawings of many of those teams WAY back in the early 20s.  We have boxes of drawings of teams of that era with player names etc..  I will upload a few.  I wonder if the league would want any of this stuff?

Definitely have some of the local teams although I have no idea if I have the Dayton Triangles or Canton Bulldogs.

Sounds pretty cool.  I would think that the NFL would definitely be interested.

In the same box I found a 1919 Indy 500 program.  3rd year for the race I think.

My wife never met her grandparents.  Her grandmother was 44 when she had her dad.  They were both born in 1896.

Very interesting sketches. Here are the NFL teams in 1925:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1925_NFL_season

There are several on the sketches that match--including some who folded during the season. I am curious as to some of the others who aren't on the NFL listing--will keep looking.

The Tigers player would have been a Columbus Panhandle player--the Panhandles changed their name to Tigers in 1925.

I have the roster of all the teams for one year, well at least the starters or best players.

Yeah, thats the year the Pottsville Maroons got screwed by the commissioner.  They won the title but were then suspended by Roger err... Joseph Carr for playing an exhibition game.  Bastard.

The Maroons were from Toledo?  I like Canton too, my HS were Bulldogs but Maroons are cool because their mascot is a color, it's unstoppable, unlike a stupid Aggie

The Toledo Maroons were playing pick-up games in the park before they joined the Ohio league & then NFL.

That painting is awesome dude.  Would frame a print of that.

I think the Maroons were from Pennsylvania.  This might not even be the same Maroons.

Ok this Pottsville Maroons controversy rings a bell.  NFL has been officially devoid of scandal since

Quote

By 1963, the NFL appointed a special commission to examine the case, but voted 12–2 in favor of continuing to recognize the Cardinals as champions. The lone dissenters were Art Rooney and George Halas, the then-owners of the Pittsburgh Stealers and the Chicago Bears, respectively.[3]

Decades later they settle & their teams are Dynasties.  Wow.

And now this kid has been invited to the rookie minicamp.
