Visiting Cincinnati area with family

Recommended Posts

Hey gang, as a former Daytonian, please accept my apologies for joining this thread late.  If plans to check out the Gem City to take in the Air Force Museum are ever on anyone's agenda, you might want to take the day to visit the former sites of the 2022 Winter Olympic Games.

It's been a while, but back in 2010 the city of Dayton was rumored to be considering a bid. Here's the archived Wikipedia entry....

Dayton's bid includes state-of-the-art facilities such as Welcome Stadium (opening/closing ceremonies), Ervin J. Nutter Center (figure skating), Hara Arena (ice hockey), Hobart Arena in nearby Troy (curling), and Mad River Mountain (downhill events). Luge, Skeleton and Bobsleigh events would be hosted on newly-constructed tracks adjacent to King's Island in Cincinnati that would later be converted for use at the Boomerang Bay waterpark. Ski jumping would be accomplished via innovative new "virtual jump" technology developed by Japan's Nintendo Corporation in association with the Air Force Systems Command's Virtual Reality Laboratory at nearby Wright-Patterson Air Force Base. Athletes would be housed in the currently-vacant Winters Bank Tower in downtown Dayton, and in the Drexel and Trotwood neighborhoods. Dayton has built a warchest of approximately $170 to help fund their bid, and are considered the front-runner of all American bids from cities nowhere near any mountains.

The minimum vertical drop for the men's downhill skiing events is 800m.  Mad River Mountain has a 300 foot vertical drop, the plans were to Men's Downhill as a series of laps. 9 laps should do it. Not a problem

Mad River Mountain is 5 miles closer to Columbus--we should be getting the Olympics!

I have made it from the top to the bottom of Mad River in 17 seconds.  Ski Patrol was a little pissed.  As soon as your skis hit the top of the hill while still on the chair lift, the clock started.

For you non metric types out there that means  with only a 300 ft vertical drop, they would have needed to pile up an additional 2325 feet of dirt to make Mad River mountain work.  That is a lot of dirt.

I think the better solution is to dig a very deep hole at the bottom and throw the Olympians into it from a tower.  All the vertical drop you could ask for & you can just pull a tarp over the hole when not in use.

Thats a big hole. So you dig down only 1200 feet and they pile the 1200 feet of dirt on top.  Simple solution.

Could kick them out of a low-flying plane but it might be hard getting them through the door with skis on.
