Offseason coaching overhaul

Recommended Posts

0-6 isn't pretty. When a team is this bad you have to expect some changes. Taylor made an obvious mistake and took on too much. Running a team and calling plays for the first time isn't working. He needs some veteran talent around him and there are some pretty obvious and I think likely choices. I know it's only been a year with some on this staff but lots of times changes happen because other guys weren't around when the coach was initially building his staff.

Stay

Head Coach: Zac Taylor

Offensive Coordinator: Brian Callahan

Wide Receivers Coach: Bob Bicknell

Tight Ends Coach: James Casey

New Coaches

OL Coach, AHC, Bill Callahanhttps://www.redskins.com/team/coaches-roster/bill-callahan

Callahan was rumored to be coming last year. He is the current interim head coach for the Redskins after being assistant head coach and OL coach since 2015.  He coached Taylor in college and is Brian's dad.

QB Coach, Greg Knapp: https://www.atlantafalcons.com/team/coaches-roster/greg-knapp

Knapp is the current Falcons QBs coach and Matt Ryan is having another great year. He has tons of experience as both a QBs coach and offensive coordinator. He was the QBs Coach in Denver in 2014 and 2015 when Brian Callahan was the assistant QBs coach. Van Pelt seems like a solid coach but Knapp is an upgrade.

RB Coach, Larry Jordan: https://www.redskins.com/team/coaches-roster/randy-jordan

Jordan is currently coaching with Bill Callahan on the Redskins. He has been coaching RBs since 1989 and coached Nebraska when Taylor was a player and with Taylor at Texas AnM.

Wildcards:

Klint Kubiak, friends with Brian Callahan QBs coach, Vikings: https://www.vikings.com/team/coaches-roster/klink-kubiak. If Zimmer is let go Kubiak could be available.

Matt Cavanaugh, coached with Bill at both Redskins and Jets: Sr offensive Assistant, Redskins: https://www.redskins.com/team/coaches-roster/matt-cavanaugh

Defense is much harder. We have ties to 2 guys who have been rumored to be on the hot seat, Zimmer and Dan Quinn. Zimmer is up to 4-2 now and Quinn down to 1-5.

There are much looser ties here but Quinn coached with Bill Callahan on the Jets in 2008. Quinn's D's in Atlanta have not been great but he was good in Seattle. He could bring an entire new and very experienced staff.

Defensive Coordinator, Dan Quinn: https://www.atlantafalcons.com/team/coaches-roster/dan-quinn

Defensive Line:

Linebackers: https://www.atlantafalcons.com/team/coaches-roster/jeff-ulbrich

Safeties: https://www.atlantafalcons.com/team/coaches-roster/raheem-morris

Corners: https://www.atlantafalcons.com/team/coaches-roster/jerome-henderson

There will be some sacrificial lambs to appease the public and media--status quo didn't set well the past number of years, why would it now?

Figure Lou will be the chief sacrifice--defense is crap, and that 2-LB scheme has been an unmitigated disaster.

Could be on the right track.

If Mike Zimmer gets the ax, DC would be great place for him

especially if Zac wears out his welcome fairly quickly.

Or Zim is a temp until getting picked up by another team.

If I was in charge, i would cal Rex Ryan and give him a blank check to come coach the defense. Gives Zac that Wade Phillips type that Mcvay has and Rex has had some great defenses. If you cant get Rex try Jack Del Rio again. There's not enough experience on the coaching staff and a veteran DC could be a big help.

A definite NO to Quinn.

His defenses in ATL have been horrible since he got there.

Does Kyle Shanahan have anyone in his coaching tree?

His offensive schemes are outstanding, and opposing defenses always seem to be on their heels while playing him.

It was told to me by someone who knows more that we couldn't get some coaches last year because they didn't want to Scout. I don't see Rex or Del Rio doing that.

I don't really see Zimmer being in that much trouble. His up-and-down GM would be the first to go should they implode or simply stagnate.

But, arguendo, if he does come loose, I wouldn't see him coming back here either. He and ML were chums. But MB treated him quite well, so never rule it out.

This organization..   Yeesh.   Do the assistant coaches also have to make the sandwiches for away games?

...and the laundry duties are assigned by position groups.

Of course, that creates some friction within the team.  When it's the Tight Ends' turn to do the laundry, Clark Harris says that he's with the kicking team...and when it's the kicking team's turn to do the laundry, he says that he's a tight end.  That bum.

Another thought at DC

Aubrey Pleasant was interviewed last year and didn't get offered. Rams D is 10th.
Pleasant was a the DB assistant in Washington and coached with Callahan a bit. Raheem Morris was his DB coach that he assisted.

Could piece together an entire new D staff with Pleasant, Morris, Ullbrich and
