Reason for the bengals sucktitude?

SUCKTOWN POPULATION: BENGALS

  1. 1. Why do the bengals suck so much ass currently?

    • Taylor is largest factor. he sucks at coaching and makes us suck, if marvin was here we would be 3-3 or better.
    • Injuries are biggest factor, if the line was healthy the offense would be rolling.
    • Lack of talent on the field. Injuries plus guys gone in FA, and so on, just not good enough to win with this roster.

Another Mo Egger article in the Athletic today. A snippet:

It is impossible based on what we know about how this franchise is run to imagine Duke Tobin feverishly working the phones to secure deals, or Mike Brown leaning on his decades’ worth of NFL executive experience to make something big happen. I have a hard time conjuring up images of the owner of the Bengals emphatically giving his football people a clear mandate to get something done, banging on his desk and demanding not only a reboot of his football team but also something to re-energize what remains of his customer base.

It is quite possible to picture a mental caricature of Brown wiping the drool off his chin after waking up from his deadline day mid-afternoon nap.

A sleepy franchise remained dormant on Tuesday, and it dug itself into a four-season deep rut that those in charge seem disinterested in climbing out of. The lack of action only furthers the narrative that as long as the people running this franchise remain tethered to the same tired and limiting philosophies, moves like last winter’s coaching change and this fall’s quarterback swap will serve as little more than an occasional reshuffling of deck chairs on the NFL’s fastest-sinking ship.

Math question - Since this team is almost primarily 'draft and develop' (and assuming any FA is just a bottom of roster guy) and given the average life span of a player in the NFL -> how many draft picks (and UDFA) does this team need to nail each year to build and retain a winning team? I am thinking 5-7 productive players per year?

From a Cincy Jungle video - Note that the plays were running don't even make sense. You KNOW the Jags D is fast - Why run a sweep?

Good breakdown does he have anything with the passing game?

53 guys on a team. If you drafted all 10 year starters, you'd need 5 a year. Of course, you still have to pay them when their initial deal is up.

The average NFL career is only 3ish years. So, 16ish?

If you wanted to draft all of your 22 starters and 3 specialists, 25 guys form the core of the team.

The reality is that the poor facilities and amenities offered by the Bengals means that no top tier FA wants to come here. So we have poor "luck" with FA's because we are never getting guys who are looking for anything more than a last paycheck. If you wanted to win would you come here?

Not that I've seen.

And I know this is going to sound like I'm defending Dalton... But honestly, with this poor play all around, benching him for his play makes as much sense as benching Joe Mixon for not getting yards.

The video shows just how awful this O-Line is, and they grade out BETTER in run blocking! (PFF) Mixon is seeing ghosts and not making cuts because he's expecting shitty line play. How do you expect Dalton to keep his eyes downfiled when these jokers are supposed to keep him clean? And sure, there are times he does have a clean pocket... But so many times when he has to be aware that Billy Price is going to let a 330lb dude run straight at him and tear his head off.

I am a former coach on the Arena 2 level... Zac Taylor doesn't have a clue. He's running QB sneaks out of the shotgun on 4th and 1. He's running sweeps on short yardage plays. He's insisting on 11 personnel with his 3 top LT's out and his 2 of his 3 top WR's.

Yeah, Dalton needs to be benched - because his body language says he knows better and this offense is a biggol heap of bullshit. Green is taking his time, Glenn wants out, we had 2 other O-Linemen retire in the offseason. They know Taylor is a joke. They don't want to play for him.

Expecting Finley to do any better behind this line is like expecting us to bench Mixon and suddenly be rushing for 200 yards a game. No offense to Finley. I just hope he can survive out there and that we don't Derrek Carr him. He's going to have a rough go of it.

Like I said previously, the best available Left Tackle right now is John Jerry.  Jerry is an average career guard.   Dalton has lost confidence which should be no surprise.  The upside is the Bengals might get something decent for him in a trade next year.  If Fitzpatrick can get starting gigs Dalton should have no problem.  Titans or Bucs make a good fit.
