I'm 100% serious. I think the Bengals were good BECAUSE of guys like them, not in spite of them. Once guys like them left the playoffs ended and the teams fell apart.

Football is a violent game and you need those kind of fire-starters to motivate the appropriate amount of passion to play violently.

In most eras the Burficts of the NFL would be celebrated with statues and be on every NFL films highlight reel knocking people out. He's the 'Iron Mike' and Lawrence Taylor of the 2010s ... but we now have an era because of the concussions where the NFL is in denial and trying to cover themselves from lawsuits. So they only want football played half way.

It is my view that on a good football team you need about 3-5 Burficts to motivate the others. You need confidence, moxy, bravado, cockiness, passion, and ENERGY to keep the other guys going and give them faith they can always win. Ideally your QB would be one of these leaders, but in the case of Dalton he was a Sunday School church mouse who wasn't going to inspire anyone. So Burfict and Pac picked up the slack. Now thankfully, Burrow has that same sort of confidence that a Burfict had -- with more impulse control thankfully.

When have the Bengals ever had success with players like that?  Never.  Trying to out Stealer the Stealers is a losing plan.  The Bengals spent most of the Lewis era trying to have success with players with issues.  Pac, Burfict, Thurmond, Henry, etc.  It didn’t work.  The last thing they need is two losers like Pac-Man and Burfict showing them how they did it.

OK, I understand your motivation angle but these 2 as coaches in my mind are even worse than Porter. King Roger would have to convene a committee to watch them.

Porter does allright with his unit..

They play with a serious edge on the field..

In our division.its needed...

I'd divide the Lewis Era into two parts. Part 1 when he relied on those kind of guys and won games, and part 2 when he didn't and the team floundered. I don't think it's a coincidence that the years where the Bengals were their best was when they had these guys with "issues" pushing the team. The pass before Palmer got Kimo'd was to Chris Henry (issues). The playoff game with Portergate was essentially won singlehandedly by Burfict (and then stolen from him) etc.  Another way to say "out Stealer" would just be to say winning a championship. Nobody remembers or cares how much of a scumbag their players are.

The Lombardi trophy isn't given to the most well behaved team off the field, or the team that builds the most playgrounds on their off days. Dalton was great in the community, and a wet blanket on the football field when it mattered most.

Moreover, part of the reason why I am so excited about Burrow is that he isn't one of these "I just want to give all the glory to God" type of guys in the post-game interview. Tua and even Sunshine for Clemson reek of this and so did Dalton in his little post game ritual of praying with the opponents in the center of the field.

But Burrow, realizes that God has nothing to do with it, he either wins the game or loses it based on preparation and skill and his "righteousness" has nothing to do with the final score. This worldview of Dalton's was part of the reason why he was never that upset when he threw an interception or fumbled at a key time. He would chalk it up to destiny or divine intervention (guess I wasn't meant to win). Burrow on the other hand has swagger. He exudes confidence and knows it's all on his shoulders, Jesus is not showing up in the fourth quarter to help him.

I'd much rather have flawed characters with heart, than missionaries that are auditioning for a post-football career hawking their 'inspirational' memoirs in mega-churches.

My goodness.  Everyone is flawed.  Some just can’t control it when it counts. Did Anthony Munoz lack heart?  Pretty religious man.  I don’t think those 80s team lacked heart because they didn’t lose their minds when things didn’t go their way.  People who can’t control themselves on or off the field will always screw you in the end.  Just like Burfict did.  They lost and his stupid hit on AB was a big part of it.  I don’t care what he did before that play.  When he faced adversity he lost his cool and blew it. The Bengals need winners, not hotheaded losers.

If Burfict and Pacman had played for the Stealers or Ravens, they would have been lauded over as just playing the Stealer or Raven way, good ol hard noised football. The fact that they played for the Bengals is why they were not given any benefit. Not saying that some of their crap was wrong, but the Stealers have been punishing other teams, especially the Bengals for decades and is has been allowed, because they are the Stealers. When the Bengals started playing hard nosed football, all of sudden its wrong, because they are the bengals and it must not be allowed for them to overtake the chosen few. Look at the crap coming out before this years draft, every talking head said the Bengals did nit deserve to have a talent like Burrow on it's team. F all of them. I hope we have a few hard nosed players coming out of this draft that will light up WR/TE/RB coming across the middle like RAy Ray used too. I want a SS that will make the other team plan around him like the hair. I want our team to be a team that other teams do not want to play.

First, you don’t have to be dirty to be a team no one wants to play against?  You think people wanted to play against the Niners in the. 80s and 90s, or the Pats for the last 15+ years?  Even so, if you play on the edge you have to be smart enough not to cross over at crunch time.  Burfict and Pac were not smart enough.

It speaks to how awful this football team has been that the highlight for the past 30 years is how a Bengal injured a Stealer, but still lost the game.  The Bengals will never win trying to out Stealer the Stealers.

I always say, the Stealers won that playoff game, because their thugs were smarter than our thugs.  Joey Porter baited Pacman and he fell for it.  Had Burfict not tried to take off Brown's head, the game was basically over.  There is a reason EVERY NFL team passed on Burfict 7 times, even though they knew how great of a talent he was.  You couldn't trust him and guess what, they were right.  The Bengals had to take risks like that, because they had virtually no Scouting Department.  Yes, Jeremy Hill fumbled.  BUT, at least that was a football play.  What Burfict and Pacman did was just plain stupidity and not being able to control their emotions.  I also blame Lewis for not having AJ take a damn knee three times and punting with very little time left.

I love that Taylor is going after high character guys.  Guys like Antonio Brown, OBJ, Burfict... are fantastic football talents, but they destroy the locker room and they can't control themselves under pressure.

I wouldn't call some of our players thugs.  Instead knuckleheads seems apt to me.  Under Marvin, he kept knuckleheads around based on raw athletics.  But they invariably knucklehead, in the crunch, when it matters most - time and again.  It's their MO.  Thats what they do. You can almost count on it.  Stealers dont' really keep freak talent knuckleheads, or the patriots for that matter, or any NFL team really.  They get rid of them despite their raw talent.  Because time and history has proven that in the crucial moments knuckleheads will lose you games.

Joey Porter WAS a thug for sure.  Knucklehead would probably be a better description of Pacman and Burfict.  I actually met Pacman at the Rising Star Casino and he was a heck of a nice guy.  He just had a problem controlling the Pacman side of him.  Burfict was a tremendous linebacker.  There as a lot of good things about him, but he always 'blew up' at the least opportune times.  Good Organizations have figured out, these types of players are just not worth it.

OK I guess this was taken wrong. I am not saying I want them to play dirty and injury anyone. I want this team to be like the 49's of the 80's or the Bears in the 80's.

I want this team to play tough. One of my favorite Whitworth moments was in the Jacksonville game when he got into a scrap with one of their D lineman. They were trying to bully the Bengals and Whit had enough. Those are the type of players that I want on this team.

I agree totally.  You don't have to showboat, run your mouth and take stupid penalties to be tough.  Sometimes being tough is taking the shot and not retaliating to help your team.

Yes, but he was a Stealer, that's a whole different thing than being a Bengal in Roger's eyes. As much a slimeball as Porter was, he gets very little attention to concuct as shown in the famous playoff game (decided by idiots). Do you really think Pac and Burfict get the same consideration from Roger as coaches? I don't.

Correct. Two different rule books.

Oh they didn't just jump him, they straight up mugged and robbed him.   On camera.   Also, Levi was on crutches at the time after having knee surgery.

Good ol' fashioned Stiller football.

Bet you can guess how many games Porter was suspended
