My conspiracy theory brain part is looking at Bellicheat and seeing his players opting out.

Does he know about an upcoming NFL compensation package for opt out players to help getting Lawrence/Fields in the 2021 draft?

Is Kraft taking care of players on the side in anticipation of NFL compensation?

Stranger things have happened.

If there's some way they can cheat and likely get away with it, that is what they're doing.

If the Patsies were tanking, they wouldn't have signed Cam Newton. Throwing Jared Stidham to the wolves would work better to get a high pick.

NFL sets two exceptions for how players can opt out of the 2020 season after deadline

NFL players will need to fit a certain criteria if they opt out after Thursday's deadline

NFL players have until Thursday at 4 p.m. ET to opt out of the 2020 season, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. Prior to the start of training camp, the NFL and the NFLPA agreed to a plan that allows players to opt out of the 2020 season if they are uncomfortable with the COVID-19 health protocols put in place. High-risk individuals could opt out and receive a $350,000 stipend, whereas those less at risk would receive a $150,000 stipend. Players also have the ability to opt out later in the season in the event that a family member becomes sick.

There are two ways an NFL player can opt out of the 2020 season after Thursday's 4 p.m. ET deadline, according to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero

  • A new diagnosis reveals that the player has a high-risk condition
  • A player's family member dies, is hospitalized or is otherwise moved to a medical facility because of a COVID-19 or related condition.

As of Tuesday morning, 45 NFL players have already opted out of the 2020 season. Here's the list of players who have made the decision to opt out. No team has had more players opt out than the Patriots. On Sunday, tight end Matt LaCosse became the eighth Patriots player to opt out for the 2020 season. Running back Brandon Bolden, offensive tackle Marcus Cannon, safety Patrick Chung, linebacker Dont'a Hightower, receiver Marqise Lee, offensive lineman Najee Toran, and fullback Danny Vitale are the other Patriots that have opted out for the upcoming season.

Over 75 players have already been placed on the NFL's recently-formed reserve/COVID-19 list. This list includes players who either tested positive for the virus or who have been quarantined after having been in close contact with an infected person or persons. If a player falls into either category, their team is required to immediately place the player on the list. Teams are not permitted, per the agreed-upon NFL-NFLPA policy, to comment on player's medical status other than referring to roster cuts. Furthermore, teams may not disclose whether a player is in quarantine or is positive for COVID-19.

Shortly after the start of training camp, Eagles coach Doug Pederson tested positive for COIVD-19, and will have to wait a minimum of five days before he can return to the team. Assistant head coach/running backs coach Duce Staley will take over the reins in place of Pederson.

Looks like the Opt-Out deadline is today (8/6) at 4pm. Outside of that, looks like players can opt out if:

  • A new diagnosis reveals that the player has a high-risk condition.
  • A player's family member dies, is hospitalized or is otherwise moved to a medical facility because of a COVID-19 or related condition.

what is the definition of a 'high risk condition?'

per cbs sports, not sure if this list is comprehensive or not but there seems to be a lot listed:

Players who decide to opt out will fall into two categories: high risk and voluntary. To be considered high risk, a player must have a confirmed diagnosis of at least one of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's 15 underlying medical conditions for developing severe illness from COVID-19. These conditions include cancer, chronic kidney disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, serious heart issues, sickle cell disease, Type 2 diabetes, liver disease, moderate to severe asthma and hypertension.

The NFL opt-out deadline has passed

The Bengals appear to be in the clear.

It appears there will be no more Bengals players opting out of the upcoming season due to the coronavirus.

Today’s 4 pm EST deadline for NFL players to opt-out of the 2020 season has passed, and there have been no more opt-outs for any Bengals. Paul Dehner has also confirmed there have been no more Bengals opt-outs.

Entering today, the only Bengals to opt-out were offensive tackle Isaiah Prince and defensive tackle Josh Tupou.

Some wondered if defensive tackle Geno Atkins could opt out due to his sickle cell trait, as people with that condition have a higher risk of serious damage to their body if they contract the coronavirus.

That’s why Atkins may have been able to get the NFL’s high-risk opt-out plan, which would have paid him $350,000 and given him an accrued season.

But as of now, no new Bengals have opted out, though this is not the end of opt-outs for the upcoming season.

Players will have the opportunity to opt-out after the deadline if “a close family member gets seriously sick with COVID or if they themselves are newly diagnosed with a high-risk condition,” per the NFLPA.

For a refresher, two types of opt-out plans are available. Players who qualify as having a high-risk condition will receive a $350,000 stipend that does not count as a salary advance, their contracts will toll, and they will earn an accrued season toward free agency.

Players who don’t qualify as high risk can choose the voluntary opt-out option, which includes a $150,000 salary advance for the 2021 season and a tolling of contracts but no credit of an accrued season.

Belichick got Cam basicly for free, they have method to their madness. They will take every edge they can, some even within the rules.

Because NOBODY wanted Newton.  The reports are Rivera had  to coddle him in Carolina since he didn’t accept criticism well and the fact is he isn’t a very accurate passer.   Takes way too many unnecessary hits as well.

Newton is a head case.  A real odd duck.  Carolina had to ship out Steve Smith because he was in Newton's face trying to get him to grow up.  WRs left Carolina taking shots at Newton regularly.

On the other hand he was wildly talented.  His accuracy was pretty good until the injuries.  Now he is pretty much damaged goods.  We'll see if a year off helped on the injury front, but he may be done physically.
