"dead money" is a meaningless concept.  It's the sunk cost fallacy in action. The decision on Geno is whether or not to pay him 12.1 mil to be on the team in 2021. Unless they expect a big year from him, it would be a repeat of paying AJ Green too much in 2020 for past heroics.

Sure, tell that to John Ross.

I mean.. I've said the same thing more than once, about how roster spots should be earned and they should field the guys that give them the best chance to win regardless of draft position or contract status &tc..  but for some reason the Brown Family Trust feels differently.

If they're paying the guy that kind of money, they're going to play him regardless.

Kinda agree with you..

Geno will be 33yrs old and is on the downhill now..

I know he had injuries but his 2019 season wasnt good..

He had 4 sacks abd only 10 hits all year..

Thatsopposed to his 10 sack 20 hit years in the past..

Id eat 5mil on him si save the 7 mil to sign Hubbard again..

I'd bring Geno into camp and see if he's recovered. If not then he gets cut. Let him earn a job

And if he gets hurt again, you're stuck with his contract. Not worth the risk, his best days are well behind him. A bounceback year for him would be 15 tackles, 2 sacks, and 4 TFL. That's not worth 12 mil.

Is that you, Mike Brown?

You forgot "get off my lawn".

Really? You'd rather pay Geno 12 mil because he's under contract while not being able to re-sign Lawson? That sounds more like Mike Brown than moving on from an esteemed but clearly past it player.

Exactly. If this team chooses to keep Geno and then says it can't sign Lawson , Bates and maybe WJIII then they are more lost then ever. At best, Geno is a part time player now and as stated, not worth the money he will be paid under his current contract.

That's what we were saying about Dunlap. Then we gave him away and Seattle fans are bragging about stealing him. I agree Hubbard and Lawson have to be a priority but quite frankly there's not enough talent on this roster to worry about salary cap stuff. There aren't many deserving of nice paydays

Well let me just say, yes he's playing way better for the Seahawks.  I've actually watched a lot of his games there because my older son is a Seahawk fan and we watch together.  They use him almost exactly the same way the Bengals did - he sits out a lot on first and second down and almost always comes in on third down.  Even if you only look at his stats, you can actually compare now - he has played the same number of games for them as he did for us this season.  He has THREE more snaps there than he did here in 7 games.  He has fewer tackles, but obviously five sacks compared to one, more TFL's and more QB pressure.  Part of that is he's playing on a better overall defense there but if you actually watch it's quite clear what's really going on - he's just trying harder, in the same role (that he complained about here) - pass rush specialist.  It's really that simple.  And you know what?  That's fine - he wanted out, he got out.  But let's not pretend like we should have kept him because he's playing harder for a different team, he didn't want to do that here.

The same thing can certainly happen with Geno, we don't know.  But to me that's not a reason to feel the FOMO of letting a guy go, or hoping they throw money at him because MB is incompetent.  If he doesn't want to be here anymore or has lost his passion to play for your team, you have to let him go and with no regrets.  I for one will cheer for Geno no matter where he ends up.  If Mikey wants to waste money let him do it on potential pieces to rebuild.

With all of that said if Mikey is going to waste money on has-beens from other teams (not unprecedented) then yes, I'd much much rather he do that with Geno than any unknowns.  It's ridiculous we have to even think this way but I agree it's just reality with MB.

If he's playing better now because he's playing harder than we have an issue here in Cincinnati. Our coaches, in this case likely Lou A, failed to motivate talent that was already on his roster. We can't afford to be jettisoning pass rushing talent like Dunlap. We just can't. Lou has got to go. I'm not convinced he can motivate Geno either. It was not that long ago that Geno's stats were up there with Aaron Donald's and N. Suh's. If we jettison him and gets back to anything close to that then that's another organizational failure

I don't disagree, but we still don't actually KNOW anything about the internals of the day-to-day room.  Does all evidence point to Anamoomoo being an ass (and not a good coach for that matter)?  Yes.  But that doesn't mean Carlos would have tried harder for someone else here, or that Geno will.  It might be an MB problem, it might be an "I'm sick of this place" problem.  Lord knows it's happened with several players in the past regardless of who was coaching them here.  Honestly, like a handful of people keep pointing out on this board - until the MB dynasty's hold on the culture of this team is gone we can't be surprised to see this from vet players.  The more distressing this time around is that some young players are doing it too (at least in Anamoomoo's case).

I'd argue that there was no motivating him at that point. Once he made up his mind that he was done, he wasn't listening to anyone.

The fact that he's doing well there just means he was dogging it here. Which begs the question, why would you keep him if he doesn't care?

He wasn't part of the future here anyhow. Have a nice career, Los.

Why do you think he made that decision though?  I think your timeline is backwards here.

I couldn’t possibly care less about Anurumo and I couldn’t possibly care less about how he’s playing in Seattle. The dude was flat out dogging it here. None of his teammates quit, just him. Fuck that guy.

We can't make it that easy for guys to get out of here. Sure playing for the Bengals and Mike Brown has to suck but it's up to the coach to keep guys from wandering off the plantation. I'm OK with keeping Zac another yr if we must but I want Lou and the O-line coach gone. Preferably their replacements will not be "rookies" at their positions

See, that strikes me as a little.. weird.  My guess is that Dunlap tried the quiet approach and only took to social media to force the issue because he had no other options left.  To me, this seems like the perfect opportunity for a coach trying to change the culture to gather the team and offer everyone the same deal.

You don't wan't to be here? Speak up and we'll take care of it. Not winning much with guys that feel like they're being held hostage anyway.  If the fear is that too many people would call their bluff and leave, well..  That kind of points to bigger issues, doesn't it?  Like maybe they have a legitimate complaint?

I guess I find it strange that any fan of this team would have so much animosity towards an aging vet forcing their way out.  To me it seems more like jealousy because the player can just go to work for a different team and find success, while as a fan you're pretty much stuck.

Water under the bridge now but suffice to say I find all this Dunlap hate misplaced.  This was the result of problems we're all painfully aware of yet some of us want to shit on him for it?

Hopefully any other malcontents are shown the door and we can bring in some coaches that actually motivate guys to play.
