Coaching Changes / Potential Candidates

And CJ and Boyd.  And Logan Wilson from what I have seen tweeted this morning.  My impression is that the players that are still here like him a lot.

The players liked Marvin too.

Players are played to play.

Normal franchises have a front office that's paid to make the right decisions.

It's amazing, the Cincinnati press has dubbed MB to be "unemotional" about these decisions. I'd say it's the opposite.

Marvin Lewis was kept in 2017 because he won two meaningless games at the end of the season. That's not emotional?

Zac Taylor largely seems to be staying on because he beat Pittsburgh in prime time. Is that not emotional?

All in all, it seems par for the course. It's an organization that is managed without a plan. They sorta just go with the flow and make decisions when they're forced to.

I guess I do not understand letting the WR coach go. Are they not one of the better parts of this team?

But they keep the DC when that is one of ours worst parts?

I heard the wr coach bolted for the door and 3 missed tackles got away:) JK I don`t hear shit unless it`s on here lol.

On another note Anthony Lynn fired 7-9 not good enough and 33-31 over 4 years. Sucks to look at their owners statement about winning and then look at our owners statement.

like every season, many coaching positions become available this Monday after the season end. Some good and some not so good options for wanna be HC and OC/DCs.  I get the Bengals front office not wanting to get into the situation they were in before trying to lure, cajole, fight for a HC. The Bengals are often the wall flower without a dance partner at the end.  Then finding OC/DC candidates is even tougher as the marquee names have already signed elsewhere. The rationale is sound, especially as mentioned earlier, Zach seems to have JBs endorsement. Let's get on with finding upgrades to the OC/DC and assistants straight away.

I send the Lumina over to Clifton with Team Katie and see if you could convince Marcus Freeman to sign on.

If you think other organizations (and good organizations) don't consult their key players and specifically their star QBs about things within the organization, you're delusional.

Coaching connections to Taylor (Sherman, McVay, Bill Callahan), Callahan, Anarumo.

RBs:

RB Coach Connection Current Link
Jim Bob Cooter Callahan-Lions NYJ-RBs Coach https://www.newyorkjets.com/team/coaches-roster/jim-bob-cooter
Gary Brown Bill Callahan-Cowboys FA https://www.dallascowboys.com/team/coaches-roster/gary-brown
Anthony Lynn Bill Callahan-Jets LAC-HC https://www.chargers.com/team/coaches-roster/anthony-lynn

Cooter was the OC in Detroit and worked extensively with Brian Callahan in Denver and Detroit. Brown was loved by Elliott etc. but was left out when McCarthy took over. Lynn would be an absolute get but will have other options. Someone suggested in another forum making Callahan the Passing game coordinator and then getting a veteran coach by making them the run game coordinator. This could make sense with Lynn.

WRs:

WR Coach Connection Current Link
Phil McGeoghan Taylor-Chargers LAC-WRs coach https://www.chargers.com/team/coaches-roster/phil-mcgeoghan
Marc Lubick Callahan-Lions BUF-Asst WRs Coach https://www.buffalobills.com/team/coaches-roster/marc-lubick
Adam Gase Callahan-Broncos NYJ-HC https://www.newyorkjets.com/team/coaches-roster/adam-gase
Keenan McCardell McVay-Redskins JAC-WRs coach https://www.jaguars.com/team/coaches-roster/keenan-mccardell
Darrell Bevell Packers with Sherman Lions Offensive coordinator https://www.detroitlions.com/team/coaches-roster/darrell-bevell
Derek Dooley Bill Callahan-Cowboys NYG-Sr O Asst https://www.giants.com/team/coaches-roster/derek-dooley

McGeohan coached with Taylor in Miami. Lubick would be interesting coming from the Bill system. McCardell and Dooley are veteran coaches that would be interesting. There were rumors that Bevell was the top candidate for our OC role when we were hiring 2 years ago.

OL:

OL Coach Connection Current Link
Mike Sherman Ex Boss and Father in Law FA https://www.pro-football-reference.com/coaches/SherMi0.htm
Jack Bicknell Jr Coached with Taylor as Asst OL Coach in Miami Auburn OL Coach https://auburntigers.com/sports/football/roster/coaches/jack-bicknell-jr-/3345
Phil Rauscher Coached with Brian Callahan in Denver/Asst to Bill Callahan in Wash Vikings Asst OL Coach https://www.vikings.com/team/coaches-roster/phil-rauscher#:~:text=Phil%20Rauscher%20joins%20the%20Vikings,during%20the%202015%2D16%20seasons.
Chris Foerster Coached with McVay in Washington and Anarumo in Miami 49ers Asst OL Coach https://www.49ers.com/team/coaches-roster/chris-foerster
Chris Morgan Coached with McVay in Washington Falcons OL Coach https://www.atlantafalcons.com/team/coaches-roster/chris-morgan
Lemuel Jeanpierre Coached with Brian Callahan in Oakland Dolphins Asst OL Coach https://www.miamidolphins.com/team/coaches-roster/lemuel-jeanpierre
James Campen Coached with Mike Sherman in Green Bay Chargers OL Coach https://www.chargers.com/team/coaches-roster/james-campen
Frank Pollack Bill Callahan-Cowboys Jets OL Coach  dhttps://I.newyorkjets.com/team/coaches-roster/frank-pollack

Bill Callahan and Frank Pollack would be the obvious choices. McVay and Sherman also coached with the OL coaches at Atlanta and LAC as well. Jack Bicknell seemed like a great option but he isn't coming with his brother getting canned. A couple assistants might be ready to be full time as well. The pickings here seem slim. The most likely candidates are probably Morgan or Campen. I don't think either line is very good.

DL:

DL Connection Current Link
Gary Emanuel Anarumo-Giants/Purdue FA https://www.giants.com/team/coaches-roster/gary-emanuel
Andre Carter Anarumo-Miami Jets DL https://www.newyorkjets.com/team/coaches-roster/andre-carter
Matt Burke Anarumo-Miami Eagles DL/Run Game Coordinator https://www.philadelphiaeagles.com/team/coaches-roster/matt-burke
Jethro Franklin Golden-U of M FA https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jethro_Franklin
Terrell Williams Anarumo-Miami/Purdue Duffner-Miami Titans DL https://www.tennesseetitans.com/team/coaches-roster/terrell-williams

If Anarumo is back there are three candidates with the most connections. Emanuel and Carter should both be available. Matt Burke was a LBs coach here before and might be out with the changes going on in Philly.

I will add the DC just in case.

Lynn was just fired, no idea if he'd be willing to go from HC to RB coach, but he is available.

I 100% believe that a very big factor in the decision to retain Zac Taylor is that Joe Burrow really seems to like him.

I've thought this for a while.  My take with Joe in particular is "why wouldn't a QB like a pass-happy HC who calls the plays?"  But when I take my cynic hat off, I have one vain hope here.  If Joe is who I think he is (that is, a QB in the mold of Peyton Manning in terms of dedication to film study and play recognition) and Zac gives him the leeway he will demand to call audibles - MAYBE Joe himself can push the offense to where it needs to go.  I have no trust in Zac at all in this regard.

We saw this with Palmer in his glory days (2005 especially) when they'd sometimes let him run the no-huddle - we were UNSTOPPABLE and Palmer was actually very good at checking into the "right" play.  Unfortunately Marvin "I'm the HC so we do it my way, even if it's not my area" Lewis REFUSED to use the no-huddle in any sort of consistent way, and when pressed on it he was outright hostile.  I don't really know why that is, it could be something extreme like, as a DC he hated the no huddle so considered it "without honour" or some garbage... or he legitimately thought it couldn't succeed in the long run, again as a DC.  Either way his ideas failed so he was stupid not to try.

Edit:  I should add, if we don't give Zac credit for anything else, he does deserve credit for trying to craft the offense around what Joe likes and incorporate plays that Joe liked from college that fit the scheme.  Not every coach would do that (certainly not a Marvin Lewis), hell possibly the majority of coaches.  Do you think Jay Gruden would ask Joe for a set of plays to add to HIS offense?  Fack no.

When Taylor was hired we all thought he would be smart and hire veterans to go with his inexperience. He didn't i was fine with him staying or going but he needed to upgrade the staff.

If turning down the Senior Bowl is his decision....that sucks.
If he doesn't upgrade his staff and just replaces them....that sucks.

The comments I've heard from the new guys all seem to be supportive of Taylor.  The old guard, Dunlap, Atkins, Green, etc. were less than impressed.  Given the Bengals history of nonperformance I would lean toward the guys that have won in the past.

On the other hand our HS team loved the coach, but lost every year.  When the finally fired the guy they started winning immediately.

Couldn’t be more excited about the future of our organization. We have a great foundation and great people at the top. Look forward to giving the fans what they deserve. Also hopefully that’s the last time I ever have to watch a game on tv

It's good corporate politics for Burrow to echo the party line. But even a rookie knows we don't have a great foundation and great people at the top. Indeed, they are part of the problem.

Did Zac say he was passing on the Senior bowl? Is it even being played this year?

If they are thinking of promoting Ben Martin to O-line coach, that's a disaster in the making. Let's hire someone who has been an NFL O-line coach and isn't responsible for the current suckitude.

I checked the want ads and the Bengal's have not posted one yet...

When they do I'm pretty sure it pays slightly better than the fry chef at McDonald's...

I was thinking the exact same thing. From everything I've heard/read so far though, Martin will be staying in his current role.

Still waiting on Anarumo.......Right now there are 7 Defensive Coordinator openings in the league.

I didn't include Marvin Lewis, but are there 8 candidates here you would take over Anarumo?
