He had 9 sacks in 2019

And yet the Falcons let him walk.  Sure, they have cap issues.  What was the result, then?  One-year deal with Titans... put on the "Did not Report List" to start the season... cut in November after totaling all of 3 TACKLES after 7 games... Raiders signed him, had 1 tackle for them in 3 games... yeah, I don't want any "redeemer" scenarios here, let's get football players who love football.

He also had a 58 rating which means he did nothing else all season..

Theres a reason teams dont want him now unless its on a 1 yr cheap deal..

Meh,, 9 sacks is a real stat.  PFF ratings are about as legit as Madden ratings.

Well it seems most everyone uses them  to a degree..

I would argue that's more to do with a single number being more easily digested for the casual fan & the fact that those numbers are heavily weighted by their own confirmation bias.  Everyone loves to quote "stats" that support their opinions.  Making up numbers to feed into that is great marketing.  Other football analysts never had the audacity to pull numbers out of their ass & instead thought they needed to base them on real, verifiable formulas that are sometimes hard to follow.  By making that formula a secret (because there really isn't one) they can say whatever they want. Do it for a few years and now it's taken seriously.

Basically "this guy is one of the best blocking TE's in the game" sounds vague but "PFF rated him an 92.2587" sounds like there is some kind of hard science behind it.  There isn't, but one of those things makes for a flashy graphic.

Well, they had o line ranked 30th in the league this year.   So you are saying it is actually good?

PFF rankings almost never surprise me so they are obviously doing something right.   They do a pretty good job explaining how they come up with the numbers and the formulas.

Rodgers scored a 94 this year, Mahomes scored a 91 Mayfield an 81.  Seems pretty legit.

That's actually kind of the point.  They almost always confirm what everyone already thinks.  Real analysis sometimes surprises you, PFF fuzzy math will never do that.

It surprised us within this conversation by having a 9 sack guy have low PFF numbers.

Maybe because he was 35th in tackles and 55th in assists at his position even though he played a majority of the defensive snaps?  He is a 1 trick pony, just rushes up field and tries to turn the corner.

just compare him to Joey Bosa in 2019:

QB hits: JB 31 VB 12

T for loss: JB 18 VB 8

tackles: JB 67 VB 42.
solo tacks: JB 47 VB 28.

If one or two stats were the only metrics then Jameis Winston would have been the top rated QB last year.

I thought PFF was transparent with their methodology. They grade every player on every play. There may be differences in graders from game to game and obviously they aren't privy to assignments. But they can see who blocked someone or made a tackle or maintained coverage or broke a tackle. I believe they equal weight the plays so 4th and 1 in the last 2 minutes counts the same as a short yardage run in a tie game in the first quarter.

I think they do a pretty good job of assigning scores to players.  They actually assign a grade for run blocking, pass blocking and overall.

Funny how the fan of a 4-12 team gets upset his team’s players receive low scores.

EDIT: I apologize to Zach Taylor and the Bengals organization for claiming they were 4-12.  They were actually 4-11-1

Panthers-Samuel would be nice but probably overkill at the position. Moten would be ideal but probably goes back to Carolina.
