A couple spots where my thinking has changed some as we get closer to the draft, plus a couple other thoughts...

1. Warming up to OL at 31. I was mostly against OL in the first but that is because I didn't want to accept that Jackson Carman may on his way towards busting. I still don't want to accept that but he is a sunk cost at this point so his draft capital doesn't matter. If they don't think he is going to be a reliable starter, then getting a stud Center or LG and really turning the OL from weakness to strength makes a ton of sense. I also like Tyler Linderbaum more after he weighted in at 300+ and had a great pro day with some big time testing numbers.

2. Coming around to idea that Safety is as big a need as CB. Really seems more and more like Bates is going to be elsewhere next year. Plus, teams plays some 3-Safety stuff. And some of the top Safeties could also provide legit depth at CB. If you look beyond this year, this is the team's biggest need over CB.

3. My crazy idea of prioritizing WR in first 2 rounds feels more crazy now. I do love George Pickens and think he would be a ton of fun to have on the roster. But realism has set in on how big a need DB is both now and in the very near future. Plus, interior OL and DL both are much bigger needs. And they can still get a good WR4 in the 3rd-to-5th round.

4. Confused why so many rank DE as a real need. The locked on Bengals guys especially seem gung ho to draft a DE. Zac Taylor's recent comments about how much they love Ossai reinforced my opinion that we are actually pretty loaded at DE. Hendrickson, Hubbard, and Ossai are all under through the end of the 2024 season and make a heck of a trio if Ossai is who the team seems to think he is.. Cam Sample and Wyatt Hubert have 3 years left on their contracts too.

1.  I agree about warming up to OL at 31.  We still have a hole at LG and looking at the AFC, we're going to have to score...A LOT.  If we can close up that hole at LG, Mixon and Burrow should be able to make us a top 5 offense.

2.  Agree...safety is a huge need.  Bates is on the tag (and can be tagged next year) and Bell is in his contract season.  I don't want this to be a need because we have other needs, but we need someone in case Bates and Bell are both gone next year.

3.  WR in the first two rounds would be fun, but we're talking about a fifth maybe sixth option on offense this year (Chase, Higgins, Boyd, Mixon, Hurst).  WR will be a need in future years even if we figure out how to keep Chase and Higgins because unless Boyd takes a tiny deal, it's going to be near impossible to keep all 3.

4.  This is the only place I disagree with you.  DE is a HUGE need IMO.  Outside of Hendrickson, we get no pressure from the edge.  People are excited about a 2nd year player, Ossai, who played less than 1 quarter of pre season football.  He may be great, but I wouldn't just say we're set at the position because the sample size is way too small.  There were times last year where we couldn't sniff the QB.  Then when Hendrickson was out we had zero pass rush.  Back injuries can be tricky so relying on Hendrickson (or any NFL player for that matter) to stay healthy for 17+ games isn't the best thing.  You can't have too many pass rushers and right now we have one who was fighting through a back injury last year.  Hubbard is nice, but he's not a pass rusher by any stretch of the imagination.  He's good vs. the run and can get some pressure if the back end holds up, but I don't see too many times when he beats his man 1:1 to make a play; it's normally schemed up or on 2nd and 3rd effort.

Maybe underrating Hubbard a bit. He had 7.5 sacks last year. 8.5 a couple years ago. He isn't a star but he is very solid and I don't think (outside the guys who will go top 10) there are all that many DEs in this draft who are likely to be 8+ sack per year guys.

Also, with Ossai it wasn't just one quarter. He had some practices where he was unblockable too. With a few additional positive data points, I think he is a better bet than any DE who is going to be on the board in the 1st or 2nd round. He's going to be a stud as a situational pass rusher opposite of Hendrickson.

So you're just drafting a 4th DE to upgrade over Cam Sample? A rookie isn't likely to play on early downs because Hubbard and Hendrickson are tough against the run. He isn't going to play ahead of Hendrickson on passing downs. And I wouldn't like a rookie DE's chances of beating out Ossai as a pass rush specialist.

The "never have too many" argument can be used at almost every position, including some (OL, CB, S, DT, etc.) where we are much worse off both in the short term and long term.

Cincinnati Bengals

Cornerback

The Bengals got Chidobe Awuzie for a bargain in free agency last year, but Eli Apple, who is most famous for giving up two touchdowns in the Super Bowl and then getting roasted on Twitter, isn’t the team’s answer opposite him. Awuzie can hold his own against top receivers and Mike Hilton is capable in the slot, so Cincinnati has the freedom to take an outside corner of any build.

1.31 Options: Florida’s Kaiir Elam, Clemson’s Andrew Booth Jr

2.63 Options: UTSA’s Tariq Woolen, Mississippi State’s Martin Emerson

3.95 Options: Alabama’s Josh Jobe, Alabama’s Jalyn Armour-Davis

Tyler's Notes: Adding a cornerback should be a top priority, especially a bigger-bodied guy. Woolen gives them a high-upside piece with elite size for the position.

Tight End

Hayden Hurst is unlikely to supplant the production of C.J. Uzomah, and even Uzomah wasn’t a special tight end. Although the Bengals boast a three-receiver set that can go toe-to-toe with anyone, wouldn’t it be fun to see them with a high-end tight end as well?

1.31 Options: N/A

2.63 Options: Colorado State’s Trey McBride, UCLA’s Greg Dulcich, Virginia’s Jelani Woods

3.95 Options: Ohio State’s Jeremy Ruckert, Wisconsin’s Jake Ferguson

Tyler's Notes: Replacing Uzomah with Hurst and a rookie should be an easy task. Ruckert gives you a little bit of everything with upside as a receiver.

Inside Linebacker

The Bengals could use replacements at both SAM and WILL linebacker, but adding a weakside linebacker makes the most sense. This allows them to play Logan Wilson at MIKE while sending Germaine Pratt up to attack running lanes.

1.31 Options: Georgia’s Nakobe Dean, Utah’s Devin Lloyd

2.63 Options: Wyoming’s Chad Muma, Wisconsin’s Leo Chenal

3.95 Options: Georgia’s Channing Tindall, Montana State’s Troy Andersen

Tyler's Notes: With the investments that the Bengals have made with their linebacking core, adding one with the versatility to rush the passer and play coverage is ideal. Dean provides that and then some for the Bengals.

Fair points, but quite a few players have been unblockable vs. our oline in real games.  I'm hoping Ossai turns into a HOF'er, but I wouldn't say our pass rush is solved based on his potential and production in a quarter of preseason football and a few practices in August.

I do agree that I may underrate Hubbard a little.  He's got good numbers, but watching the games he just doesn't seem to make a huge impact most of the time.  I don't think teams are game planning around him and he's not commanding a bunch of extra attention.  I like him as a player, but to me he's just average.

Hubbard was ranked 5th at run stoppage win rate of all DEs..

His job is different from Hendrickson who is a spectacular pass rusher..

This is a good combo.

Totally agree, he's fine.  He's a good run stopping DE who has good sack numbers as well.  I don't consider Hubbard a pass rusher though he has decent numbers....I'm specifically talking about those who that edge isn't a need.  I thinking we need another pass rushing edge; as of right now we have one (Hendrickson) and a possible (Ossai).

We need a 3tech to rotate with BJ Hill.

I think they really like Khalid Kareem as a rotational piece as well.

On drafting olinemen.

Bengals play a wide zone offense..

Some teams like a power zone ..

A wide zone relies on quickness..

Teams will go with 300 pounders over 330 pounders in this formation.

I see the team is building their oline that way now..

Guys like Spain Carman and other beefies should take notice..
