And the saying of WW Hayes holds true—regardless of how many times a ball is thrown:

"only three things can happen when you pass (a completion, an incompletion, and an interception) and two of them are bad."

(Should note also that Van Brocklin had 2 INT’s in that record holding game)

Not to nit pick but a pass interference either offensive or defensive is in the mix, too,

but don't tell Woody.

In his time, there was no such thing as pass interference--either way. DB's could beat the literal hell out of receivers all the way down the field. So could the receivers on the DB's. Old time football!

Pass routes did make for a great de facto blocking scheme for the run...took the DB's out of the run support.

Yeah, I know.

Until the Issac Curtis rule.

But just sayin' there is a new figure in the equation.

No such thing as pass interference?

The pass interference rule goes back to 1910, so yeah, we've pretty much always had PI. What changed in recent yrs is the illegal contact rule where you can be flagged for illegally touching a receiver even before the pass is released:

A famous coach; may be Woody Hayes, Bernie Moore, or Darrell Royal once said; when you throw a pass only three things can happen, and two of them are bad. Well, there is a fourth option, a flag for pass interference and there are good and bad associated with it for an offense. We cover the history of pass interference rules in this episode.

And one more thing, PI hasn't changed anything on blocking downfield for running plays. You can block DBs all you want if the QB hands the ball off to a RB. You just gotta stay off of them while the QB has the ball in the pocket

Figure of speech. Of course there was PI even back then--I got called for it on a few occasions myself (and I certainly beat hell out of receivers).

The point was: in that time, it wasn't anywhere close to the micro-managed thing it is now.

Not really important right now but the. E gals have been working out several CFL players including QB Nathan O’Rourke and WR Dalton Schoen (rookie of the year) ; good to see they are looking at every corner for players. O’Rourke is likely to go to a QB needy team but Schoen would be an excellent pick up - Irwin type player
