FEMA Wants No Photos of Dead
From Reuters

NEW ORLEANS — The U.S. agency leading Hurricane Katrina rescue efforts said Tuesday that it does not want the news media to photograph the dead as they are recovered.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency, heavily criticized for its slow response to the devastation caused by the hurricane, rejected journalists' requests to accompany rescue boats searching for storm victims.

An agency spokeswoman said space was needed on the rescue boats.

"We have requested that no photographs of the deceased be made by the media," the spokeswoman said in an e-mail.
The BBC is showing full coverage of the Hurricane and thus the rest of the World is seeing the thousands of dead bodies..... but yet the American public has our news censored.... is this right ?
Serious question. What would be the point of showing the dead bodies?
I guess I would also seriously ask, What would be the point of not showing the bodies?

This applies to more than just Katrina..... In Iraq we also don't show any of the dead... but the BBC and rest of the world does. Thus Other countries may not be supportive of the War or War in general because they see the "real side" of such war and not a candy coated version

Uhm Ive seen some of the dead bodies on CNN, granted its probablly not what the BBC is showing (I dont know) but its not as if they arent showing them at all, I saw two in one report of one guy laying there spread out next to the other guy in his wheelchair, both dead.

i voted no... i had to give a second look at storms answer, thinking he posted twice w/ two different answers... i thought you were losing it storm... your just trying to fuck me, huh sneaky?? :D

i don't think that showing dead bodies does anything constructive imo... we know they are there and all it will do is piss off the families that may or may not know yet... the families deserve to be the first to know (nationally)...

I agree that showing dead bodies does nothing constructive but I don't want the federal govt telling us what we can and cannot see, that is nothing short of censorship

Why don't they show kiddie porn on tv? That's censorship. That's obviously extreme, but you have to draw the line somewhere. You can't just say censorship is bad. If it's on the open airwaves, there's got to be control. The best parents in the world can't sheild their children from totally uncensored media. Besides, there will be plenty of power point dead, floating bodies presentations soon enough on the web. Guaranteed.

I for one, dont understand why the media is still covering this event. It is water under the bridge. (pardon the pun) The major networks should do their jobs and show more coverage of NASCAR for example. Im tired of looking at all these refugees on my tv screen....got refugees drowning, refugees playing football, my God when will this crap end.

Out of respect to the families.

I'll say the networks should be allowed to show the bodies, but should choose not to out of respect for the dead, the families of the dead, and the viewers. I'm not a fan of censorship, and prefer people to have the chance to choose to do the polite thing... Sometimes it works, sometimes you get boneheads who post every disgusting photo on the internet (out of respect for BJ, I won't name names).

I vote no. It's unneccessary. We know the horrors of death and war without seeing the body. Constantly seeing the bodies of dead people would de-sensitize the veiwers to the horror of death. If the media was allowed to show it we would get bombarded with images of dead bodies in car wrecks, shootings, babies that were beaten, etc..
I don't need to see a body to be saddened and outraged.

I too hate the governments fingers into everything, but they're not saying you can't see it. They're saying "the news" can't broadcast it. If you want to see dead bodies go to rotten.com or some other outlet.
I edited my post.  Rick, are you suggesting we should call the post whore police on Sean? If that's the case, they better bring a big-ass paddy wagon.

Images of lifeless refugee children floating face down in muddy water
may give our american children nightmares.
[post="143953"]<{POST_SNAPBACK}>[/post]
You're unbelievable. You are implying that BLACK children might give WHITE children nightmares, right?
And if not, your "tongue-in-cheek" potrayal of the disaster in New Orleans and elsewhere is despicable. Either way you're engaging more into the "blame someone" camp than actually doing anything about something, rather than just bitching....

And here you're really being an asshole, and you know it. Talk out of both sides of your mouth all you want. You simultaneously express outrage, remorse, contempt for the events surrounding the hurricane and it's disatser element yet you manage to play the race card against America, and you reference NASCAR....nice....nothing like blaming Whitey for everything that befalls you.
After all, Condoleeza Rice is a Mexican menu item...
