Former NFL Executive Breaks Down How Teams Are Beating The Salary Cap

Recommended Posts

Cash over cap has been around for a long time. So have contracts with big signing bonuses and low base salaries in year 1. So have voidable years. A year ago this time it was Tampa doing similar things to what the Rams are doing now. But all the money paid out will eventually hit the team's cap. Just not this year.

It all works as long as the cap is on the rise. But when Covid hit or an event like it that makes the cap go down, then if you have kicked the can down the road you are in double trouble - cap reduction plus future cap monies coming in.

It will important to keep an eye on the levels of guaranteed monies, becuase if the cap drops down the road those numbers can't be shaved by cutting the player. The more and more guaranteed money in teams cap sapce the less flex they will have with contracts (restructures, etc.)

surprisingly i didnt learn anything. i was thinking when he started that the cash up front part was somehow now hitting the cap like ever...

butits the same cap kicking the can theyve been doing forever... i guess the cap going up in bigger chunks makes it possible.

Isn't New Orleans in cap hell at the moment?

Not really.  They are over but a lot of teams are at this point.  That is one reason nobody will pay the Browns the asking price for Mayfield.

Every team is in cap compliance currently. They've had to be since the start of the league year, back in March. During the offseason, rosters can have up to 90 men with only the 51 highest cap numbers counting. Once we get to week 1 of the regular season, everyone counts. That means all 53 on the active roster, guys on IR, the practice squad, guys on PUP, and guys who were cut with dead money.

Saints don't have much cap space but they are only paying their QB 14 mil this year compared to other teams with vet QBs getting over 30 mil.

When Covid started and the cap went down, the Saints were something like $100M over the cap. They have done a pretty good job and getting back in line but they certainly went 'all in' in the last few Bree's years. They had to cut or not re-sign a lot of very good players though to get back in line (like Trey H)
