The NFL CBA still requires teams to provide coverage so the Bengals seem to be proposing privately supplied coverage. Not sure if the bill has any chance of passing or what other pro sports teams say about it. I work with a lot of public/governmental organizations nationwide, and only a handful of states are state-mandated “sole remedy” Workers Comp ones. Ohio, of course, is one of them. I see the other states with either hybrid state/private consortiums or direct private insuring on competition basis. Ohio does allow for “private insurance” for employers-but IIRC, it is for those with 500 or more employees. The Bengals/Browns combined may not meet that threshold. In any event— I would be quite interested in seeing what plans MB has to achieve the private insurance route. Generally, private insurance can be tailored with better flexibility, better benefits, and lower cost compared to that of straight bureau administered. And, if the main concern is going to be long-term disability claims by long-retired players, there would be private plans catered to that need. Going this route certainly isn’t “stripping coverage” from players—as the union is bloviating about.
stryker57
oh i can understand any unions hesitation over any ownership controlling disability benefits . things tend to be shown as equal when it starts then they turn into lawyer talk over details. and what happens if after 10-15 years the bengals go bankrupt or lock out the union , does someone on disabily insurance suddenly lose their coverage? Not if the injury occurred during the program term. If that is the case, it wouldn’t matter if the entire NFL collapsed.

From: https://overthecap.com/salary-cap/cincinnati-bengals Total Cap Liabilities: $195,722,782 Top 51: $191,379,778 Team Cap Space: $33,786,354 Pre-June 1 Cut Savings Joe Mixon: $7,291,176 La'el Collins: $6,050,979 Post-June 1 Cut Savings Joe Mixon: $10.041,176 La'el Collins: $7,717,647 So roughly $46M to $50M depending on when they would be cut. MichaelWeston
TJ Edwards first off the board. The LB got 3 years 19.5 from the bears. LB Quincy Williams just got 3 years 18 million from the Jets. I have to believe those are doable numbers for Pratt to return.

You know Hobson will say it's at least $20m below that. See there's the rookies, and potential injuries, and of course JB.. In fact, let me hold $20? 😆

The reality is both Pratt and Wilson will command numbers like this. Wilson is up next year. Can they afford both at this price? If not, which one do they want? Love them both, but in today's NFL the coverage guy is worth more, IMO.

The NFL (and apparently fans) want to see superstar QBs hucking it down field. OL holding is routinely ignored which makes those specialists less valuable. They still make plays but it's rare now to see officials let them take over a game. There's a reason Derrick Thomas's single game sack record (8) has stood for over 30 years and it's definitely not because the players all got worse. Last season no one got (I'm saying were allowed to get) more than 3. The games are being called differently. A pass rush still matters but gets negated far too often now. Didn't Pratt want to go somewhere where he could play all 3 downs?
