2023 Free Agency thread

I kind of get where you are coming from but if you're going to grade their free agency, the only reasonable grade to give right now is incomplete.

I think they have something in the neighborhood of $20M to play around with still.

1. They need to sign a starter at Safety.

2. They need to sign a starter at Tight End.

3. They need to sign a committee guy at RB who can play 50% of snaps.

4. They need to sign a possible starter at RT.

That's a lot to get done given their realistic budget. Especially if you hope to have some left over for depth at CB or DT. It shouldn't be a surprise that they are playing hardball and not paying $7 or $8M per year for guys like Hurst.

There's still plenty of good players out there and the longer they are on the market, the more likely it is that the Bengals can get them at a good number that lets them cross off all four of their big remaining needs with solid guys.

Going back to this an hour later and everything looks different...

On the one hand, the Brown signing should seal the deal as far as La'el getting cut. That would open up some more cap space. But every if you say they had $25M to play with, this takes up $16M of it (though maybe less if it's frontloaded?).

Priority now shifts to adding a starting Safety. Hopefully still have $6M or so to get a legit guy there.

Almost certainly means we are looking at cheap, stop gap veterans at RB and TE but this signing also opens up the early rounds of the draft for those positions.

Brown is playing LT

We still need a RT, unless the move Williams to the right side, wich would surprise me.

One way for the Bengals to really open up their draft is to push big and sign Orlando Brown, then you can use the first 3 picks on your starting TE / S / RB and not have to worry about the OL.

From 30 hours before it happened ^^^^

Heading to day 4

RB: Still a lot of interesting guys left. If we go with age there are 2 that standout as potential Mixon replacements

1. Devin Singletary is 26-He is more elusive than Mixon, not as good of a pass catcher but a much better pass blocker.

2. Damien Harris is also 26-I have never been a huge fan but if cheap I think he can give us a lot of what Mixon gives us in the run game, a better pass blocker and while not a great receiver he hasn't been asked to do it.

TE:

3 options

1-Sign a stud long term

---Foster Moreau-Just 26. The last of the all around TEs available-Played with Burrow at LSU. If you pay him you don't have to use a Draft pick on a TE

2-Sign a stud short term with the argument that you can play with Burrow and then get a big contract elsewhere next year

---Dalton Schultz-decent all around TE

---Mike Gesicki-impact pass catcher will be 28 at the start of the year

3-Sign a veteran that can start and split time with an early rookie

---Austin Hooper

---Robert Tonyan

---Cameron Brate

---Jordan Akins-He is 31 but might come super cheap....was productive last year in limited time 37 catches, 495 yards and 5 tds and played for Troy Walters at Central Florida.

OL

C/G depth-Lots of guys still out there

CC's

-Ben Jones

-Graham Glasgow

-Pat Elfien

UFA's

-Wes Schweitzer

-Matt Skura

-Max Garcia

-Dan Feeney

T-We have a starting LT and then a bunch of questions at RT

1-Is it Jonah and then a draft pick for 2024

2-Is Collins back?

3-Can you trade Jonah and cut Collins and then sign one of

---Isiah Wynn (Just 26)

---Matt Feiler (Could compete at LG and RT)

---Jermaine Eluemunor (Solid year at RT in 2022 and just 28)

---Cam Fleming (31 but 15 starts last year and a 74.1 pass grade)

DT

I assumed that we would get one because there were so many but this list has shrunk. A rotational 3T is still a need

---Calais Campbell (Cap Casualty and 37, coached by Hobby in JAX)

---Matt Ioannidis-29, would love to get him and he doesn't fit in Carolina any more

---Adam Gotsis-Should come cheap

---Greg Gaines-Just 27. on the rise

---Kevaun Street-Just 26

If we're bargain shopping RB & TE are much better spots to do it than OT or S.

Interesting tweet from the Giants beat writer a couple days ago saying that the Giants were interested in Nick Scott and that around the league he was viewed in the same tier as Vonn Bell, Juan Thornhill, and Julian Love.

He wasn't on my radar at all but looks like he may be one of those guys NFL teams are higher on than the media.

They were rumored to like him in the draft. My memory could be off but I remember it being the same year as Jonah Williams and the Bills traded up for him a couple spots ahead of us. We then traded back and took Drew Sample. Both Ford and Sample were busts so didn't really matter.

Nick Scott is a bit of an an under the radar player, at least with fans. He's a bit green from a starting perspective despite the fact he's 27. But, the guy played basically all the defensive snaps last year at SS and plays hard and hits hard. He'd be an interesting add.

Cody Ford is also an intriguing possible addition. He's essentially been a "bust" to this point but, that was more so at RT. He's just too slow to play tackle. My hope would be that he's being looked at as a depth at OG, not a possible replacement at RT.

Malik Wright doesn't think Gardner Johnson is likely that he wants to get paid

I would 100% think this is accurate. This is his first opportunity to make big dollars. I can't see him taking a discount contract anywhere. I'd assume this is why he's still on the market. For me, I'd just like to have a guy named Chauncey on the team.

Longer he's out there the more his price drops
