QB offseason

Recommended Posts

I wrote this awhile ago....some changes obviously need made but wanted to paste it because overall its interesting

The QB movement this offseason should be just as exciting as recent years. We already know players like Derek Carr and Jimmy Garoppolo will be switching teams, but Lamar Jackson, and Aaron Rodgers could be on the move as well. With too many openings for too few sure starters we could see some surprising starters come week 1 (See the recent Sam Howell news).

I break the 32 teams down into three main categories. Teams that obviously have their starter for 2023. Teams that probably have their starter for 2023 but have questions. Teams that don’t know who will be starting for them next year.

Locks (10)

Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes and Dak Prescott are all already on long term deals and are the centerpieces of their teams. Joe Burrow, Justin Herbert and Jalen Hurts are all stars likely to cash in and set the market this summer. Deshaun Watson isn’t going anywhere after signing his guaranteed deal. Trevor Lawrence had an exceptional sophomore season including a playoff win. Minnesota will welcome Kirk Cousins back after his pro bowl season helped them to 13 wins. The Lions GM has already said that Jared Goff will be the starter for next season. It will be interesting to see what a full season of Jameson Williams does for his play.

Settled but questions (10)

Bears: Justin Fields deserves to be back and build off this year. The only question here arose when the Texans won in week 18 and gave the Bears the number one over all pick. I assume the team is more likely to trade the pick than take a QB and then trade Fields

Broncos: Russell Wilson will be back after Denver invested both money and capital to get him. He came on at the end of year after struggling early. The only reason this is a question is that the Broncos will have a new head coach in 2023. The Broncos could potentially hire Dan Quinn who could potentially bring Brian Schottenheimer with him to Denver. Schottenheimer was Wilson’s offensive coordinator in Seattle.

Cardinals: Kyler Murray’s torn ACL ended his season on injured reserve. Additionally, the Cardinals will have a new coach after Kingsbury was fired. While he should be back by the start of the season and his contract means he will be in Arizona, his injury and the new coach raise questions.

Dolphins:  A series of scary concussions interrupted a great season for Tua Tagovailoa. If his health shortens, or pauses, his career they may turn to rookie Skylar Thompson. There is a possibility they turn outside and go after someone like Tom Brady. The Dolphins owner reportedly wanted Brady in 2020 when he was leaving the Patriots and in 2022 after his return from retirement.

49ers: With the rise of Brock Purdy the 49ers have two internal options for next year.

Giants: Daniel Jones is a free agent but will reportedly receive a big extension early in the offseason.

Packers: The Packers have their QB for 2023. The only question is who it is. They want Aaron Rodgers back but Jordan Love is waiting in the wings (in the final year of his contract) to take over. If Rodgers leaves Love will start. If Rodgers stays, Love could be elsewhere competing for a chance to start.

Rams: This one is basically settled. Stafford has indicated he intends to return and the Rams just need to pick up his option which they will reportedly do.

Seahawks: The most unbelievable story of 2022 is likely to continue into 2023. Both Geno Smith and the Seahawks want the free agent back in Seattle going forward.

Stealers: This is likely Kenny Pickett’s job to lose next year. He wasn’t great this year so it wouldn’t be a huge surprise if they paired him with someone like Jacoby Brissett or Andy Dalton who eventually beats him out if his play doesn’t improve.

Open Spots (12)

Now for the fun part. These teams will at least be considering making a big switch even if they stick with what they have.

Teams with new Head coaches

Colts: Indianapolis is moving on from Matt Ryan. The Colts have the fourth pick in the draft and could embrace a rookie finally after going the veteran route with Phillip Rivers, Carson Wentz and Ryan in back to back to back seasons. Their GM has said they would do whatever it takes to move up and get a QB.

Panthers: Carolina will have a new coach, the 9th overall pick and Matt Corrall back from injury. Free Agent Sam Darnold is only 26 and finished the year 4-2 as the Panthers starter.   New coach Frank Reich has ties to Brissett, Wentz and Matt Ryan. All who could be available

Texans: The Texans pick second after winning in week 18. They are all but assured to be pairing a new coach with a top pick.

Teams with new Offensive Coordinators

Bucs: Tom Brady called it a career. Byron Leftwich is out as offensive coordinator. Kyle Trask is an option in house but the team also picks 19th.

Commanders: The Commanders appear to be moving on from Carson Wentz and might just hand things over to Sam Howell. However, on the fringe of the playoffs this year they might be a destination for one of the veterans. They too are searching for a new Offensive Coordinator.

Jets: The Jets still have Zach Wilson but after sniffing the playoffs they likely want someone they can have more confidence in. Mike LaFleur is out as Jets OC. Jackson, Garappolo, Rodgers and Carr have all been rumored as options here.  Garappolo has ties to Saleh from San Francisco.

Patriots: Mac Jones didn’t show well in his second year and recent interviews with Bellicheck haven’t shown much confidence in him for next year. They could at least consider a veteran as a backup plan. New Offensive Coordinator Bill O’Brien should get a big say. Brissett and Garappolo are both former Patriots but have no ties to anyone on that side of the ball still. This one could be interesting or very boring.

Ravens: This is free agent Lamar Jackson’s job if he wants it, and the Franchise tag is likely in play.  But what if he wants to move on? Jackson is starting somewhere in 2023 and I would bet it’s with Baltimore. Greg Roman has moved on and they are searching for a new offensive coordinator.

Titans: The Titans might be finally willing to move on from Tannehill. It looks like Malik Willis is going to take more time than they would probably like. I would assume they look for a veteran. They are another team that is replacing their offensive coordinator. Is Carr or Garappolo an obvious upgrade? They hold the 11th overall pick and could be willing to go the Rookie route again.

The rest

Falcons: Atlanta could be one of the more interesting stories at QB. They have the 8th pick and could take one there. Desmond Ridder went 2-2 over the last four games and could still be the answer. Arthur Smith was Ryan Tannehill’s OC for 2 years in Tennessee. This one will likely come down to what they think about Ridder compared to this year’s class.

Raiders: Derek Carr was the most high-profile divorce of the season. They hold the 7th overall pick and McDaniels has coached both Garappolo and Brissett. The Elephant in the room is Brady who McDaniels obviously has coached as well. I’m not sure the Raiders will be enticing for him though.

Saints: This might be the biggest wildcard this summer. They don’t have a first-round pick or a developmental guy on the roster. Soon to be free agent Andy Dalton wrestled the job away from Jameis Winston midseason. Winston is still under contract for 2023 with a dead cap hit of 11.2 million. A post June 1st release pushes most of that into 2024 (2.8 2023, 8.4 2024) and saves 12.8 million in 2023.  David Carr has met with the Saints and could be an option there.

Options

1.       Lamar Jackson (26, 61 Career Starts): I had assumed he wouldn’t be leaving but cryptic social media messages might be a signal that he’s ready to move on. He should be the first shoe to drop with a mega contract in Baltimore or a mega trade.

2.       Aaron Rodgers (39, 223 Career Starts): Rodgers toyed with the idea of leaving last offseason and might do so again.

3.       Tom Brady (46, 333 Career Starts): If he still wants to play someone will gladly take him. He has connections to Las Vegas, San Francisco and Tennessee.

4.       Derek Carr (32, 142 Career Starts): He is the best of the group that will definitely be on the market. He will be starting somewhere.

5.       Jimmy Garoppolo (31, 57 Career Starts): He went from a guy who couldn’t find a starting role in the summer of 2022 to being in high demand in 2023.

6.       Ryan Tannehill (35, 143 Career Starts): Tannehill has another year left on his contract but the Titans could look to move on.

7.       Jacoby Brissett (30, 48 Career Starts): In a typical year he is on the outside looking in. With the number of potential openings he could be in demand.

8.       Gardner Minshew (27, 24 Career Starts): He may follow Shane Steichen (or Jonathan Gannon/Brian Johnson) as at least a bridge depending on if he gets a job.

9.       Baker Mayfield (28, 69 Career Starts): We will see if Baker gets another chance after bouncing around the league this year.

10.   Andy Dalton (35, 162 Starts): Dalton has started for 4 different teams the last 4 years. He could be back in New Orleans.

11.   Jameis Winston (29, 80 Career Starts): Under contract in New Orleans for 2023 but could be a cap casualty after being beat out by Dalton.

12.   Taylor Heinicke (30, 25 Career Starts): His teammates love him but he has a pretty clear ceiling.

13.   Jordan Love (24, 1 Career Start): It all depends on Rodgers. If he is back Love might be gone.

14.   Tyler Huntley (25, 8 Career Starts): A restricted free agent who might find a market.

My best guesses for the open spots.

Bucs: Trask and Heinicke.

Colts: I think they will move up to one of the top three picks and take a QB. Maybe all the way up to 1st.

Falcons: Tannehill and Ridder.

49ers: Purdy and Lance

Jets: I think this is where Derek Carr lands with Greg Olson.

Packers: Rodgers back.

Panthers: With the 9th pick they could be a player for a rookie and may even move all the way to the top. The team looks to be going for an offensive guy to take over the head coaching role. If I had to guess it would be Shane Steichen and they would bring Gardner Minshew over from Philadelphia to compete with Matt Corrall. Corrall was the only QB to visit the Eagles last offseason.

Patriots: I think they run it back with Mac Jones.

Raiders: Draft Pick after missing out on the top group.

Ravens: Lamar Jackson.

Saints: Brissett but this is the hardest one.

Texans: This should be a no brainer for one of the top two picks.

Redskins: Pair Howell with Dalton.

Titans: Garappolo goes to the place where he thinks he can win the easiest.

I wouldn't be surprised if San Fran trades Trey Lance to the Titans. The new GM in Tennessee drafted Lance when he was with the 49ers. That depends on Purdy being expected to be healthy for training camp.

They allready have Malik Willis.

I don't think Lance is any better..

Just trading for another prospect doesn't seem advantageous for them..

Stealers fans on Twitter have high hopes that Pickett is going to be a star. I both hope and believe that they are in for a letdown. If there is a Pickett era, I think it will more closely resemble the Neil O'Donnell era than it does the Ben Roethlisberger era.

Kenny Pickett reminds me of Mayfield on the field less Baker's arm strength.

Inbreds will beef the Oline  up to help him.

His ceiling could be a Dalton type.

This thread wasn't really about it but I am going to hijack it.

I would never draft a QB as a backup. I would love to develop a guy who can run as I think a guy filling in needs to just be able to get first downs.

QB
Dorian Thompson-Robinson-UCLA (U) V

Clayton Tune-Houston (U) 3C PD
Adrian Martinez-Kansas St (U) 4C
Max Duggan-TCU (U) PD
Sean Clifford-Penn State (U) 4C Cincy

Malik Cunningham-Louisville (U) C

Aidan O'Connell-Purdue (7) V

We should sign a cheap vet with previous starting experience as Burrow's backup. It doesn't make sense for Browning or a rookie to be the backup. They've never started a game in the NFL. I like the idea of upgrading from Brandon Allen but we could have offered Gabbert a contract. He signed with the Chiefs for 1.3 mil, which is much less than we paid Allen last season.

Allen made 1.5 last yr so not much difference..

Neither could carry a team very far..

Allen knows the system..

Wont really matter whos the backup if JB goes down..

Protection of him is the main priority .

That was a fun read, nice job dude!
