TE Offseason 2023

Recommended Posts

Some thoughts

1. I dont think there is anyway Hurst leaves. With what he has been through with his mental health and his noted lack of a fit in Baltimore and Atlanta I think money won't matter much to him.

2. I think Sample is close with a lot of the key guys on the team and the management obviously loves him. I bet hes back cheap

3. I think Wilcox fits exactly what they want depth at the position. Special teamer who can fill in.

4. I think they want to fill out the roster with a draft pick with upside to eventually start.

5. I don't think it's wise team building to take a TE in the first round.

Good points but I might argue if Michael Mayer is on the board its a probibilty

they draft him..

He has all the tools so be a well rounded TE they need for the future.

I am seeing a lot of that. I just think financially its a really bad play

1-We want a first rounder who plays right away because of how we will have to pay Burrow-Higgins

2-The difference between a Free Agent TE and a Draft Pick TE financially isn't that different whereas the different between a Free Agent CB/LT and a Draft pick will likely be pretty large.  The 28th pick in last years draft has a contract that pays him on average 3.2 million. Hurst made 3.5 this year.

3-If we took Mayer I won't like the logic of the pick but the player will be great.

4-We will have to sign a starter at TE before the draft. We can upgrade but we won't be able to count on getting a starter in the draft.

Mayer is 6'4  265lbs..

He's the best blocking TE in the draft .

He finds seams with outstanding hands..

He's bullish after the catch..

He'll be an upgrade over the vet Hurst quickly due to his allround abilities and would solidify the spot fir years..

I have not watched Washington yet but from what I hear he's basically like a 3rd tackle.

I worry about the development of TEs. They take so long. I think you are right and Mayer should be plug and play. But that's not how most TEs are.

Here are the numbers from last years TEs (Not too terrible actually)

2 55 ARI Trey McBride 29 265 1 6
3 73 IND Jelani Woods 25 312 3 1
3 80 DEN Greg Dulcich 33 411 2
3 101 NYJ Jeremy Ruckert 1 8 0
4 106 TAM Cade Otton 42 391 2 5
4 112 NYG Daniel Bellinger 30 268 2
4 128 BAL Charlie Kolar 4 49 0
4 129 DAL Jake Ferguson 19 174 2 1
4 139 BAL Isaiah Likely 36 373 3 1
4 143 TEN Chigoziem Okonkwo 32 450 3 5
5 149 WAS Cole Turner 2 23 0
5 170 HOU Teagan Quitoriano 7 113 2 2
5 177 DET James Mitchell 11 113 1
6 192 IND Andrew Ogletree
6 198 PHI Grant Calcaterra 5 81 0
6 208 PIT Connor Heyward 12 151 1 3
6 213 ATL John FitzPatrick
6 218 TAM Ko Kieft 7 80 1 8
7 227 MIN Nick Muse 0

Nope. Darnell Washington Is the best blocking TE in this draft and there’s not even a close second.

Just curious: you have always known everything about every one, draft wise. Is it from watching many hours of games/films? And, is it a hobby or a profession?

Either way, you have rarely been off-target.

Hobby that started in 1984 with the drafting of one Norman Julius Esiason. Been hooked ever since. I don’t get into like I used to due to time constraints but I definitely still try and keep up with most of the prospects throughout each year.

And. You'd be right....😊

I went back over the blocking grades of TEs and I saw Mayer with a 70 grade which is very good..

Above  other TEs except

Washington who graded at 81...

Outstanding blocker..

Much respect my friend..

Let's say the Bengals free agency at TE consists of re-signing Hurst for 3 years at 7-8 mil per year and bringing back Sample and Wilcox on vet min deals.

In that situation, TE should be on the board for consideration at pick 28. It depends on what other needs we have and who is available but Mayer would be a good pick. He could easily supplement, then replace Boyd's role in the middle of the field. I doubt we extend TB after the 2023 season due to what we'll be paying Tee and Jamar. The same logic would apply to someone like Jaxon Smith-Njigba if he were still on the board. Of course a CB or LT would offer more positional value but they may not be as good a player.

I'd be happy with either one. Kincaid as well, so I guess we'll see what the Bengals value more, very good receiver, good blocker (Mayer), Great blocker, ok receiver (Washington), great receiver, terrible blocker (Kincaid). JMHO, but I believe all three will be gone before the Bengals 2nd round pick, I like all three, but I REALLY want either a tackle or cornerback at 28 (depending on who's there). The Bengals could simplify this by signing a RT who would be a decent starter (an up grade over Adeniji ) then go best BPA which then could be a TE
