WR Offseason 2023

Some thoughts

Content I Started

1. It appears we are going to try to pay Higgins and Chase

2. Irwin is a FA and should be back he isn't explosive but he is a fine backup

3. We are awesome at finding quality UDFAs and I don't expect that to stop (Irwin-Morgan-Lassiter-Pryor)

4. There is an argument I am warming to where we trade Boyd. I love Boyd but if you can get a 3rd-4th for him you are probably getting his long term replacement and 9 million to spend on Pratt-Bates-FA lineman. If you are trading a year of Boyd for Dalton Risner and a 3rd round WR for 3 years I think you do that.

5. IF, and its a big if, you trade Boyd, then you are looking for a FA slot WR. Otherwise the list below is probably not really meaningful.

Guys I would look at

1. Ashton Dulin. Just 26. Inside-outside and special teams. From Ohio. He might be a good flyer regardless of Boyd. 4.4 speed

2. Jarvis Landry. Could start at slot if Boyd leaves. Played for Taylor in Miami

3. Chris Moore. UC guy, solid last year in Houston. Another guy who could land here with or without Boyd.

4. Richie James. Great stats last year at NYG. Great speed

5. Greg Dortch. He's restricted but wasn't drafted so could come cheap

6. Olimade Zacheous. I am not even trying to spell this one. He has been solid last two years.

It looks likely the team will extend Higgins this offseason once the Burrow deal is done. Chase would be in line next year though the team might wait an extra year due to his 5th year option. Boyd is probably going into his final season in Cincinnati due to cap constraints.

Having 2 WR1 caliber players is a competitive advantage but a bit of a luxury. Higgins has pretty good trade value so we should consider it if we get a good offer. Boyd has good positional versatility as he can play inside or outside. It's not hard to find a slot receiver as colleges churn them out. We could take the next Jordan Shipley, Cole Beasley, Hunter Renfrow or Danny Amendola. A player I like is Elijah Moore of the Jets. He's disgruntled there so they might trade him cheap.

The Bengals carried 6 WRs most of the time last year but the last 2 guys, Morgan and Taylor were mainly special teamers so we were thin when Chase was out. I'd like to see more of an offensive contribution from those roster slots.

I'd be trying to trade Boyd.  He's still got it but there's only one ball & plenty of options here.

If Jaxon Smith-Njigba is still somehow still sitting there at 28…do you take him?

If you already know your not gonna be able to keep Boyd, why not grab a stud like JSN to replace him on a rookie deal?

I think its pretty easy to get a slot reciever. I. would let that pass.

Possibly. Depends on who else is available and what we've done in free agency. But assuming Chase, Higgins, and Boyd are on the roster, it's hard to use the first round pick on WR4.

Agree but look at Dax Hill..

Late 1st..

Play a few snaps but learned the defense to replace Bates.

Njigba could learn and replace Boyd next season..

Depends on their big board though.

I really like Mingo, Ole Miss has been putting out some tough WRs lately...AJ Brown & DK Metcalf come to mind. He seems like another guy in that mold, like a RB playing WR.

Probably goes much earlier then I would be willing to take him but I like him.

Unless we gain more picks, we probably aren't taking a WR before round 4 at the earliest. It would be a future replacement for Boyd and if the player can return kicks, he could take Trent Taylor's roster spot for 2023. In some mocks, I try to get Jayden Reed in round 4 and sometimes he's there and sometimes he isn't. But WR is a lower priority than RT, TE, RB, and CB.
